WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Barry Buccaneers
recorded three attackers, who hit into double-digits in kills to
defeat Rollins at home, 3-1 (25-23, 11-25, 25-22, 25-16) in
Sunshine State Conference volleyball action Friday evening at
Warden Arena.
Rollins (16-13, 2-7 SSC) was led by junior outside hitter Nikki Hartman and her 16 kills, which improves
her team-best kill count to 392. She finished with 17 digs, giving
her 15 double-doubles on the season.
Sophomore setter Erin Wareham chimed in with 34 assists and 12
digs and complete her all-around effort with five kills on 13 total
attacks earning her a .385 attacking percentage.
The Tars' defense kept them in the match as they held the
Buccaneers (11-7, 3-6) to a .152 hitting percentage. Rollins
collected 76 digs and used seven blocks, five from freshman Lora Lieb, to remain in the contest. Freshman Phoebe Corder led the team with 24 digs improving
her conference-best mark.
However, it was Barry's persistence that resulted in the outcome
of the match as primary attacker Camilla Pagnan obtained the
match-high 19 kills, while Julia Ridley and Meisje-Sable Burton
trailed with 10 a piece.
In the first set, the Buccaneers hit .318 in a back-and-forth
match after a Rollins comeback. Trailing 17-11, the Tars evened
the match at 20, which included a pair of kills from Hartman. In
the end, the Buccaneers proved to be too tough in the first
frame.
Rollins stormed back in the second stanza by hitting .467 with
seven kills coming from Hartman. Sophomore Caitlin Vyborny chipped in with three, while
junior Natalie Branche was perfect with three kills.
The 14-point set victory was due mainly to the offensive surge and
limiting the Buccaneers to a .029 attacking percentage.
After the intermission it was all Barry. After claiming a 25-22
victory in the third set, the Buccaneers made a late-run to build a
lead to nine points before securing match.
Rollins returns to action, Saturday, Oct. 25 at 4 p.m. against
Lynn.
