DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (January 5, 2008) ' The
Rollins men's swim team rolled up 10 top-five finishes to take
third of seven teams at the annual College Winter Invitational,
hosted by Rollins in Daytona. The Rollins women added three
top-five finishes to take sixth of eight teams.
The University of the Cumberlands won both men's and women's
meets with Wingate taking second in both. Rollins Catawba and
Illinois Tech rounded out the top five in the men's with
Bloomsburg, Catawba and Bridgeport finishing out the top five in
the women.
Rollins' men had a big day in the relays, led by a second place
finish from the 200 yard freestyle relay. The team of Brad Rubash,
Tom Alexander, Billy Shugart and Jeff Mueller posted a time of
1:32.02 and were just out touched by Cumberlands by .52 seconds.
The 200 yard medley relay squad of Colby Loetz, Jackson Nicholson,
Jay Schmitz and Carson Nicely finished third in 1:42.07 while the
1500 yard freestyle relay took second in 5:24.15.
Individually, Mueller had three top-five places. He took third
in the 200 yard butterfly in 2:07.17, fifth in the 200 yard
backstroke in 2:07.15 and fourth in the 200 yard IM in 2:06.91.
Nicholson was third in the 200 yard freestyle in 1:49.36 while
Kamel Tejeda took fifth in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of
5:08.89. Loetz was fourth in the 50 yard freestyle in 22:64 with
Nicely taking fifth in 22.70.
For the women, Rollins was fifth in the 200 yard medley relay
with a time of 2:03.73, fifth in the 1500 yard freestyle relay in
6:26.11 and fifth in the 200 yard freestyle relay, stopping the
clock in 1:50.16.
Tayler Marx tied for sixth in the 50 yard freestyle for the
Tars, finishing in 26.45. Stephanie Posner took 10th in the 100
yard breaststroke in 1:18.77 and Ally Best was 12th in the 500 yard
freestyle with a time of 5:53.01.
The Rollins swim teams will get back to dual meet action on
Wednesday, January 9 when they will host Westminster and Gordon
College at the Alfond Pool. Competition is slated to begin at 2
p.m.
