SAINT LEO, Fla. (January 5, 2008) ' Five Tars
scored in double figures as No. 4 Rollins picked up a 95-88
overtime win against Saint Leo on Saturday. After playing to a
67-67 tie in regulation, Rollins exploded for 28 points in the
extra period, all from the beyond the arch or the free throw line.
Rollins now stands at 11-1 overall (1-1 SSC) heading into next
week's match-up against 11-0 Florida Tech.
Kevin Hogan led Rollins with a career best 28 points, shooting
13-16 from the free throw line and 5-14 from long range. The junior
scored 14 in overtime, hitting two three pointers and going 8-8
from the stripe. Jeremy Sharpe also set a new career best, netting
18 points with seven rebounds. Nick Wolf chipped in 15 points and
eight boards off the bench with Craig Reichel adding 14 points and
eight rebounds. Jonny Reibel recorded a double-double with 11
points and 11 assists to go along with four steals.
Saint Leo (6-5, 0-1 SSC) also had four player in double figures,
led by Dusty Driggs' 23 points. Jordan Prais added 22 points and 13
rebounds with Kyle Rowland netting 16. Jonathan Banks put up 13
points and pulled down six rebounds while Quentin Cullop added 12
points and eight assists.
Coming off their first loss of the season the last time out,
Rollins came out firing, but was matched by a pesky Saint Leo
squad. The Tars went up by as much as seven in the middle of the
half, but the Lions came back and built a four point lead on two
different occasions. The hosts held a two point lead in the final
minute of the half, but Reichel hit a layup for the Tars to tie the
score at 30 heading into the break.
Saint Leo went up by six early in the second frame, only to have
the Tars swing the six point lead their way behind trey's from
Sharpe, Hogan and Wolf and hold 50-44 lead with 11:46 left. A 16-3
Lions run, capped off by three straight Driggs' free throws, put
the Lions up seven, 60-53 with 5:41 to go. Back to back layups from
Reichel later on put the Tars back on top by one before Driggs'
connected from long range to give the Lions a two point lead with
two minutes left. Wolf knotted the score with a runner in the lane,
but Banks hit a three from the corner to put the Lions back on top.
On the Tars next trip down the floor, Sharpe hit from long range to
tie the score at 67 with 1:41 left. Both teams had chances to win
down the stretch, but couldn't convert and the game headed to
overtime.
Banks and Sharpe traded three's to begin the extra frame before
Hogan scored eight straight points to put Rollins ahead for good.
Reibel added a three and four free throws in the period with Wolf
also getting a pair from the line.
Rollins shot 80 percent in overtime and ended the game 44.4
percent from the field while the Lions finished the day 47 percent
from the floor. The Tars held a slight edge on the glass,
39-35.
No. 4 Rollins will be back in action January 9 when they will
travel to No. 20 and undefeated Florida Tech. Tip-off is slated for
