Rollins Rallies Past Eckerd In Five-Game Thriller

WINTER PARK, Fla. (September 16, 2007) ' In their first five game match of the season, the Tars took down the Eckerd College Tritons 3-2 (30-27, 27-30, 31-29, 29-31, 15-9) on Sunday afternoon at Warden Arena.

Rollins (9-5, 1-0) was led by three seniors offensively with Lorena Orlandini notching 13 kills and six digs, Christina Reinders with a double-double of 18 kills and 12 digs and Piper Young who tallied 22 kills four aces, eight digs and four blocks. Kim Cline totaled 23 digs and Lacey Malarky had two kills and 57 assists on the afternoon. Junior Stephanie Nichols added a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs for the Tars.

The Tars and Tritons battled back and forth in each game of today's five game match. In the first game, Rollins was able to jump out to a six point advantage (7-1), but the Tars let the Tritons right back into the game tying it up 20-20. Attacking errors on the Tritons gave the Tars a 29-27 lead with Orlandini pounding the last kill of the game for Rollins (30-27).

The scoring in the second game went much like the first, but this time Eckerd came out on top 30-27. At 29-29 in the third game, Cline served up an ace, followed by a block by Orlandini to hand the Tars the third game win 31-29. Rollins had opportunities in Game 4, but were unable to convert at 29-29 with a service error and attacking error.

The deciding fifth game had the crowd on their feet. Rollins began the game 0-2, but bounced back to make it 8-4 at the side switch. The Tritons would not go down so easily, clawing their way back to and 8-8 tie. However, their comeback proved to be short-lived Young put the Tars up 12-9 with a kill. Reinders came through in the clutch serving up two aces (14-9) and freshman Jenny Sherwood sealed the deal with a kill to give the Tars their first conference win.

The Tritons (9-3, 0-1) were led by outside hitter Lydee Benoit who had 24 kills and 16 digs. Setter Shannon Ruby totaled 50 assists and outside hitter Keisha Carter tallied 13 kills and five blocks.

The Tars will be back in action when they play host to the defending National Champion Tampa Spartans on Wednesday, September 19 at 7:00 p.m. at Warden Arena. Log onto www.RollinsSports.com for live stats and updated news following the match.
