Rollins Volleyball Splits In Day One In Hawaii

HILO, HAWAII (August 24, 2007) ' The Rollins College volleyball team started their '07 campaign by splitting a pair of matches at the Hawaiian Style Classic. The Tars (1-1) defeated Hawaii Pacific 3-0 (30-24, 31-29, 30-27), but fell to Houston Baptist 3-1 (25-30, 30-22, 30-27, 30-17) in the second match.

Three players tallied combined double-doubles on the afternoon. Senior outside hitter Piper Young led all scorers on the day with a 28 kills and 20 digs, while junior Stephanie Nichols tallied 24 kills, eight digs and four aces. Right-side Lorena Orlandini chipped in 13 kills and 13 digs with three aces and six blocks. Senior Christina Reinders rounded out the offense with 11 kills and four aces.

Junior setter Lacey Malarky notched 68 assists and a team-high seven aces on the day.

In game one action against Hawaii Pacific, the Tars jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead with a Young service ace and a kill by lone sophomore Natalie Branche. Rollins kept that momentum, never giving up the lead (30-24). Game two was a battle as the HPU Sea Warriors kept it close throughout, until the Tars put on the pressure and forced Hawaii Pacific to make the errors (31-29). Rollins came out firing in the third game, catapulting out to a 5-0 lead. The Tars were up by as many as 12 points, but the Sea Warriors were unrelenting, narrowing the margin to only two points (28-26). Kills by senior leaders Orlandini and Young sealed the match for Rollins (30-27).

The second match against NAIA No. 9 Houston Baptist proved much more difficult for the Tars. Rollins started out the first game dominating the Huskies 13-3. HBU closed the gap, but Rollins came together to win game one 30-25. The Tars lost their focus and control in the next three games, falling to Houston Baptist 30-22, 30-27, 30-17. With the win, the Huskies bring their record to 2-0.
