TAMPA, Fla. (May 6, 2007) - The Rollins
baseball team concluded its Sunshine State Conference season with a
pair of losses to No. 2 Tampa in a doubleheader at the UT Baseball
Field on Sunday afternoon, falling in Game One 16-4 and in Game Two
8-6.' The Tars dropped to 25-28 overall, and they finished the SSC
season in eighth place with a record of 9-15.' Tampa improved to
42-9, 20-4.
Freshman right-hander Marc Hewett (2-6) was credited with the
Game One loss, allowing five runs in five and one third innings.'
Sophomore left fielder Jesse More continued his hot hitting with a
3-4 game, and junior designated hitter Mike Crane went 2-4 with a
homerun, one run, and two RBI.' Freshman right fielder Scott Chase,
sophomore third baseman Anthony Soto, and junior center fielder
Corey Whiting also scored runs for the Tars, and Whiting's came on
a solo homerun in the eighth.
The Tampa offensive explosion in Game One was led by designated
hitter Junior Mejia (2-3, double, four RBI), shortstop Roberto Mena
(3-6, two homeruns, three runs, three RBI), catcher Chris Rosenbaum
(3-3, two runs, one RBI), and center fielder Ryan Williams (2-2,
two homeruns, four RBI).' Ross Jackson (7-4) picked up the win with
two runs allowed in six innings.
Game Two was a closer affair, as Rollins tied the game at two in
the fifth and went ahead 4-3 in the sixth.' Five straight singles,
three of which were bunts, gave Tampa the momentum to lead off the
bottom of the sixth.' The Spartans ended up scoring five in the
inning, going ahead 8-4 leading into the final inning.' Rollins
rallied for two in the seventh, narrowing the deficit to two, but
sophomore reliever Rick Hudson got the final two outs to pick up
his first save of the year.
Soto led the Tars at the plate in Game Two, hitting 3-3 with a
double, one run, and one RBI.' Sophomore first baseman Ryan Maddern
and sophomore catcher Eugene Martinez each had two hits, and
Maddern added three RBI while Martinez drove in two.' Freshman
starter Danny Clark scattered six hits over four and two thirds
innings while giving up three runs.' Junior reliever Bill Bradley
(0-1) got the unlucky loss, as three of the five runners he allowed
were bunt hits.
Right fielder Craig Corrado (2-4, two runs, two RBI) and second
baseman Ryan Kennedy (2-4, homerun, two runs, one RBI) paced the
Tampa lineup.' Reliever Craig Benner (1-0) picked up the win, as
entered the game and got out of a bases loaded jam in the
sixth.
Rollins will finish the season with a three-game road trip to
the Northeast, and the first game will be on Tuesday, May 8 at 4:00
p.m. against Merrimack College.' The game will be played at Bentley
