BOCA RATON, Fla. (April 27, 2007) - A wild
pitch in the bottom of the tenth inning brought home the deciding
run in the Rollins baseball team's 5-4 loss to Sunshine State
Conference opponent Lynn on Friday afternoon at the McCusker
Sportsplex.' The loss drops the Tars' record to an even 24-24
overall, and they now stand at 8-11 in conference play.' The
27th-ranked Fighting Knights improved to 31-19, 12-7 with the
win.
Freshman left fielder Scott Chase had another good day, hitting
3-5 with a homerun, two runs, and one RBI and raising his batting
average to .413.' Sophomore catcher Eugene Martinez (1-3, double,
one run, two RBI) and junior center fielder Corey Whiting (1-3, one
RBI, two walks) also performed well at the plate.' Senior starter
David Nathanson lasted six and two thirds innings, giving up four
runs on seven hits and one walk.' Sophomore left-hander Mike
Stopperich came in to get a strikeout in a pressure-filled seventh
inning, and senior right-hander Jon Wano (5-5) pitched the final
two and one third innings and was credited with the loss, giving up
just one run while striking out four.
Center fielder Nicolas Boisvert (2-4, double, one run, two RBI,
one stolen base) and right fielder Jason Ten Eyck (2-5, two
doubles, one run, one stolen base) led the Lynn lineup.' Joel
Burnett and Craig Sheets combined to pitch six and one third
innings out of the bullpen, giving up one run on five hits.' Sheets
(3-3) picked up the win, pitching the final three innings.
Lynn scored first in the bottom of the third when Boisvert
doubled, stole third, and advanced to home on an error by the third
baseman.' Rollins struck back with three in the top of the fourth,
highlighted by a two-run double by Martinez and an RBI single by
Whiting, but the Fighting Knights came back to retake the lead with
three of their own in the bottom of the inning.' A blast over the
right field wall by Chase in the top of the seventh tied the game
at four, and the bullpens took over to extend the game into extra
innings.' Ten Eyck doubled with one out in the 10th and advanced to
third on a wild pitch.' After an intentional walk to designated
hitter Dan Rovetto, Wano's first pitch to the next batter bounced
out of the reach of the catcher, allowing Tan Eyck to score the
winning run.
Rollins will return to the McCusker Sportsplex on Saturday,
April 28 for a doubleheader against Lynn at noon.' Fans can listen
