WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 4, 2007) ' The Rollins
baseball team dropped the first game of a doubleheader against #16
Florida Gulf Coast 9-3 at Alfond Stadium on Sunday, but the Tars
came back to win the second game 6-5 thanks to an RBI single by
junior left fielder Mike Crane in the bottom of the ninth for the
extra inning victory.' Rollins now stands at 11-6 overall, and the
Eagles now sport a record of 13-4.
Rollins jumped out to a two-run lead early in Game One, but FGCU
scored one in the fourth and six more in the sixth to break the
game wide open.' Rollins starter Jon Wano (3-1) was credited with
the loss after allowing seven runs, six earned, on six hits and six
walks in five and one third innings.' Sophomore catcher Anthony
Soto led the Tars at the plate, going 4-5 with four singles and one
RBI.' Rollins also received two hits each from freshmen Scott Chase
(2-4, double, one RBI) and Ryan Luker (2-4, two doubles, one
run).
The top of the order was successful for the Eagles in Game One,
as leadoff man Stephen Rassel (2-4, two runs, one RBI) and number
two hitter Chris Allessandria (3-5, double, one run, one RBI) led
the FGCU lineup.' Second baseman Derek Mollica also drove in two
runs for the Eagles.' Derek Shaw (2-0) picked up the win out of
relief, and Pete Woodworth struck out eight in four innings for his
first save of the year.
The Eagles were on the board first in Game Two, scoring one off
Rollins in the top of the first, but the Tars came back for two in
the bottom of the inning and one more in the third.' Rollins took a
3-1 lead into the top of the seventh, but FGCU rallied for four
runs to take a two-run lead.' The Tars fired back and evened the
score at five, pushing the game into extra innings.' Crane led the
Tars with a 4-5 performance, scoring one run and driving in
another.' Junior third baseman Gary Martoccio went 3-5 with two
runs scored, and he started both the rally to tie the game in the
seventh and the rally to win the game in the ninth.' Soto picked up
three more RBI in Game Two, and Luker again went 2-4.' Tars starter
Marc Hewett pitched six strong innings, allowing three runs, one
earned, while striking out six and walking seven.' Sophomore
reliever Michael Eppich (3-1) picked up the win out of the bullpen,
allowing two unearned runs in three innings of work.
Third baseman Ozzie Borrell and right fielder Vinnie Scarduzio
led the Eagles lineup in Game Two.' Borrell went 3-4 with one run
scored and Scarduzio went 2-4 with two doubles, one run, and two
RBI.' FGCU reliever J.J. Crumbley (3-1) was credited with the loss
after giving up one run without recording an out in the ninth.
Rollins and Florida Gulf Coast will return to Alfond Stadium on
Monday, March 5 for the third and final game of the series, and
first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
