Tars Unable To Stay Afloat Against Sharks

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 4, 2007) - The Rollins women's tennis team suffered their first loss of the season against conference foe the Nova Southeastern Sharks (7-0, 3-0) 7-2 Sunday afternoon at the Bert W. Martin Tennis Complex.

In No. 1 doubles, 18th ranked Tasi Purcell and Marnie Mahler brought home the only doubles victory as they defeated Alexa Korotkevich and Ulia Talaenko 9-7. Allison Arof and Sonia Bernal put up a good fight in the No. 2 spot, but lost the battle against Anna Schmidtmann and Edita Kulichova 9-8. Tsippy Waterman and Mary Crider put away Silvia Frandji and Anastasiya Shevchenko 8-4 in third seed action.

No. 10 Purcell rallied past No. 17 Korotkevich 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 in the top seeded singles match. Mahler went down against Talaenko 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in second seed play, while Bernal fell to Waterman in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 3 slot. Fourth seeded Shevchenko was handed a loss against Kulichova 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, as Frandji lost to Schmidtmann 6-1, 6-2 in No. 5 singles. Mai-Han Nguyen was frustrated by Crider 4-6, 6-4, 16-14 in the sixth seeded singles match.

Rollins (5-1, 1-1) will hit the hard courts on Tuesday, March 6 when they host Clayton College and State University at 3:30 p.m. at the Martin Complex.
