WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 6, 2007) ' The Rollins
women's tennis team bettered their record to 6-1 as they defeated
the Clayton College and State University Lakers 6-3 on Tuesday
afternoon at the Martin Tennis Complex.
The Tars swept all three doubles matches on the way to their
victory. The 18th ranked doubles team of Tasi Purcell and Marnie
Mahler upset the 2nd ranked team of Julia Chergova and Anna Redesci
9-7 in the No. 1 spot. Sonia Bernal and Allison Arof took out
Zsuzsa Marosfalvi and Elena Bondari 8-4 in the second seeded match.
In No. 3 doubles, Silvia Frandji and Anastasiya Shevchenko
eliminated Maria Larsen and Anna Marton 8-5.
Rollins won three out of the six singles matches to clinch the
win over the Clayton College and State Lakers. No. 10 Purcell fell
to Redesci 6-4, 6-1 in the top position. Mahler went down against
No. 34 Chergova 6-3, 6-4 in the second singles match. Bernal took
the reigns with Bondari 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 3 position. Shevchenko
sealed the win for the Tars with her victory over Larsen 6-2, 6-4,
while Frandji gave it her best effort against Marosfalvi in the No.
5 spot losing 6-2, 6-3. In the No. 6 spot, Mai-Han Nguyen played a
scrappy match against Marton and came out on top 1-6, 7-5
(10-2).
The women's tennis team will be back in action on Wednesday,
March 7 at 3:30 p.m. as they play host to the 25th ranked Grand
Valley State Lakers (3-1).
