Tars Hand Southern New Hampshire Two Loses In Doubleheader

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 25, 2007) ' The Rollins softball team took two victories in a doubleheader against the Southern New Hampshire University Penmen, 2-1 in the first game and 8-0 (five innings) in the second game on Sunday afternoon at Lake Island Park.

Only three Tar players notched hits off of the Penmen pitcher Ashley Smith. Sherri Rabenold led the Tars' bats in Game One going 1-2, while designated player Ingrid Schumacher and second baseman Amanda DeFilippo each tallied hits in the first game. Nicole Anderson pitched her 17th win of the season allowing only three hits with two walks and 12 strikeouts.

Southern New Hampshire University scored in the top of the first inning when Penmen catcher Felicia Brum singled up the middle to send rightfielder Tara Moriarty running to home plate. Rollins fought back in the bottom of the fifth by first loading the bases, and then Rabenold and catcher Victoria Rudolph scored on a Penman outfield error to give the Tars the 2-1 lead and the game one win over Southern New Hampshire.

In the second game, the Rollins bats exploded as third baseman Rachel Almengual went 2-2 with an RBI, and first baseman Stacy Sanders hit 2-3 with two RBI. In the batter's box, Schumacher (10-1) was 2-3 with an RBI, while on the mound she pitched a three-hitter with one walk and one strikeout.

The Tars (27-7, 4-2) started the scoring barrage early as they notched two runs in the first inning. Almengual scored first, followed by Sanders who was knocked in by a Schumacher double.

In the bottom of the fifth, Rollins clinched the series sweep with six runs scoring on five hits. Almengual drove in Rabenold on a sacrifice bunt, and Sanders blasted her seventh homerun of the season to give the Tars a 5-0 lead. Shortstop Lauren Starcher registered her 14th RBI of 2007 when she singled up the middle to bring Jamie Rausch home, while Schumacher ran home on an error. Devon Kontos singled and Starcher came home ending the game in a mercy rule in the fifth inning.

Ashley Bernstein picked up the loss for the Penmen (2-2) as she pitched four innings giving up eight runs on eight hits and six errors.

The Tars will be back in action on Tuesday, March 27 when they travel to West Palm Beach to take on the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (13-24) at 4:00 p.m.
