WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 13, 2007) ' Rollins
picked up its third win in as many games on Tuesday in the 59th
Annual Rollins College Baseball Week at Alfond Stadium, and junior
outfielders Mike Crane and Corey Whiting each homered for the
second game in a row in what turned into a 9-6 slugfest against New
Haven.' The Tars improved to 16-8 overall, and the Chargers lost
their third in a row to drop to 4-5.
Whiting finished the day 2-3 with a run and five RBI, four of
which came on a grand slam in the second inning.' Crane (1-3, one
run, one RBI) followed Whiting's shot with a blast over the
scoreboard in right field, making it back-to-back homeruns for the
Tars.' Junior third baseman Gary Martoccio also did well at the
plate, going 1-3 with three runs, one RBI, and two walks out of the
leadoff spot.' Sophomore catcher Eugene Martinez hit 2-4 with a run
scored as well.' Freshman left-hander Danny Clark (1-0) gave up
five runs in six innings for the win, and sophomore reliever
Michael Eppich finished the last three innings for his second save
of the year.
New Haven center fielder David Anderson led the Chargers
offense, hitting two solo homeruns over the right field wall.' Dan
Rosa entered the game as a pinch hitter, and he blasted one over
the center field wall for a two-run shot.' Chargers starter Vince
Lehman (0-1) was credited with the loss after surrendering seven
runs, six earned, in three innings.
Rollins scored in the first when junior first baseman Stefano
Foggi grounded into a bases loaded double play, and New Haven came
back with one in the top of the second on Anderson's first solo
shot.' The Tars then put a six on the board, as Martoccio drew and
bases-loaded walk to score the first.' Whiting then hit the grand
slam for four more runs, and Crane followed with his own homerun to
up the score to 7-2.' The Chargers started chipping away at the
lead, scoring two more on solo homeruns by right fielder Ken Appel
in the third and Anderson in the fourth.' Rosa's two-run shot in
the sixth narrowed the lead to two, but that would be the closest
the Chargers would get.
The Tars will continue Baseball Week as they will play host to
Merrimack at Alfond Stadium at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14.'
