Rollins Thrashes Eckerd 3-0 In Conference Play

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (October 17, 2007) ' The Rollins volleyball team set foot on the floor of the McArthur Center and were immediately on fire as they trounced Eckerd 3-0 (30-18, 30-27, 30-28) on Wednesday evening.

Three Tars notched double-digit kills as Lorena Orlandini led the way with 15 kills, two assists and two digs. Christina Reinders followed close behind with 14 kills and 10 digs, and Stephanie Nichols tallied 10 kills and 12 digs on the night. Setter Erin Wareham had a career-high 42 assists, while Kim Cline registered nine digs. As a team, the Tars recorded 10 blocks to the Tritons two.

It was all Rollins from the start as the Tars jumped out to a ten point lead in the first game, 23-13. Kills by Reinders, Orlandini and Nichols rounded out the Game One win, 30-18. The second game was a close one as the Tritons came back to tie the game 25-25. Once again, the senior leadership of Reinders and Orlandini propelled the Tars to the Game Two victory, 30-27.

In the third game, Rollins and Eckerd traded leads until the Tars pulled away at 12-11. Rollins won six straight points on a kill from Jenny Sherwood, a service ace from Wareham, in addition to attacking errors by the Tritons. Eckerd would not go down quietly as they came from behind to tie the score at 27-27. A Triton error, followed by a kill from Christie Eastman, gave the Tars the match point. Orlandini secured the win for the Tars will a decisive kill (30-28).

Lydee Benoit and Keisha Carter each tallied 15 kills for Eckerd (17-7, 5-4). Setter Shannon Ruby had 51 assists and libero Kristy Busse totaled 13 digs for the defense.

The Tars (15-11, 4-5) will be back in action on Saturday, October 20 when they travel to Tampa to take on the University of Montevallo at 12:30 p.m. and the University of North Alabama at 7:00 p.m. Fans can log onto www.RollinsSports.com for links to live stats and updates news and statistics following the matches.
