WINTER PARK, Fla. (January 20, 2007) ' The
Rollins men's basketball team overpowered conference rivals the
Eckerd Tritons 73-66 at Warden Arena in the Tars first-ever
nationally televised game which was featured on CSTV. This win
notches the Tars eighth straight win overall, while also boasting
an 11-0 record at home this season.
The Tars (14-3, 5-1) had three players score in double-digits on
Saturday afternoon. They were led by sophomore center Craig Reichel
who had 20 points, four rebounds and four assists. He went 57.1
percent (8-14) from the field and 57.1 percent (4-7) from three
point range. Junior point guard Jonny Reibel had an excellent
shooting afternoon with 19 points, nine assists and two steals.
Reibel was 54.5 percent (6-11) from the field, 66.7 percent (2-3)
from behind the arc and 83.3 percent (5-6) from the free throw
line. Sophomore guard Kevin Hogan added 18 points, one assist and
four steals.
In the first half, the Tars held the Tritons to only two points
in the opening two and a half minutes. Rollins continued to roll
and they were up by 23 points at the sound of the halftime buzzer,
53-30. The Tars outscored the Tritons 14-10 in points in the paint,
20-5 in points off of turnovers, 4-0 in fast break points and 15-13
in bench points. Reichel notched 15 of his 20 points in the first
half.
Coming out of the locker room in the second half, Rollins'
shooting woes began immediately when they failed to score until
three minutes into the second half. Reibel broke the scoreless
cycle with a layup to bring the score to 55-36 in favor of the
Tars. With five minutes to go in the half, Eckerd cut their deficit
to 10 points which brought the score to 65-55. The Tritons
scratched their way back to be within five points (71-66) with 15
seconds remaining on the clock, but that would be as close as
Eckerd would come to defeating Rollins.
In the second half, the Tritons (13-4, 3-3) showed the Tars why
they were a team to be reckoned with. Eckerd beat out Rollins 18-8
in points in the paint, 21-0 in second chance points and 12-7 in
points off of the bench. Yet all of these efforts were not enough
as the Tars went on to defeat the Tritons 73-66.
Eckerd was led by junior guard Josh King who had 21 total
points, two assists, two steals. Matt Cenatus, a senior guard,
tallied 17 points, one assist, two steals and 12 rebounds for the
Tritons.
