Continuing on their tough Sunshine State Conference schedule this
week, the Tars will take on SSC foe Saint Leo Lions. The Tars hold
a 67-14 record against the Lions.
The Rollins men's basketball team topped Lynn University 68-52
on Saturday evening, January 13 at the de Hoernle Center. The Tars
(12-3, 3-1) now hold an overall six game win streak.
Senior guard John Thinnes and sophomore guard Kevin Hogan led
the Tars offensive. Thinnes tallied 17 points and three assists. He
was 66.7 percent (6-9) from the field and 71.4 percent (5-7) from
three point range. Hogan also notched 17 points in the Tars' win
over the Fighting Knights. He was 57.1 percent (4-7) from the
field, 50.0 percent (3-6) from behind the arc and 85.7 percent
(6-7) from the free throw line. Forward Isaac Codrey added 13
points, two assists, three steals and five rebounds for
Rollins.
Rollins and Lynn began the first half trading shots back and
forth, but as the half progressed it was Rollins who was able to
jump out to a four point lead at halftime, 28-24. Thinnes led the
scoring in the first half with eight points, followed closely by
Codrey with seven and guard Deon Troupe with seven as well.
The Tars came out of the locker room with a renewed sense of
urgency as Thinnes knocked down a three pointer within the first 20
seconds of the second half. The increased energy was felt among all
Tars' players as they jumped out to a 19 point lead with 10 minutes
remaining the in the half, 51-32. In the last five minutes of the
game, the Fighting Knights made their last attempt to cut the
Rollins' lead, but were only able to come within 12 points of the
Tars, 50-62. Rollins only allowed Lynn to score two more points for
the remainder of the game with the final score 68-52.
The Saint Leo University men's basketball team (8-6, 2-2 SSC)
got back to .500 in the Sunshine State Conference with a crucial
73-70 victory over visiting Florida Tech (5-12, 1-4 SSC) in an SSC
game on Saturday evening, January 13.
Four Saint Leo players scored in double figures to help the
Lions knock off the Panthers. SLU was led by freshman Jordan Prais
(Lakeland, Fla.) who scored in double figures for the sixth
straight game with 11 points and graduate Alleo Frazier (Tampa,
Fla). Florida Tech was led by Jod Kelley and E.J. Murray who had a
game-high 13 points each.
Saint Leo was able to build a 13-point lead in the first half
before seeing Florida Tech crawl back to make it a seven-point
deficit at the half.
In the second half, Saint Leo was able to ward off several
Florida Tech runs to never relinquish the lead. However, the
Panthers were able to get within one at the 11:48 mark before
seeing the Lions build their lead back up to seven with 1:17
left.
The visitors used a five-point run to get to within two, but
could not get any closer as they eventually fell by three.
Guard John Thinnes, guard Jonny Reibel, center Craig Reichel,
forward Isaac Codrey and guard Deon Troupe will look to lead the
Tars. Guard Alleo Frazier, forward Jordan Prais, guard Richard
Blue, guard Quentin Cullop and forward Saladeem Dewberry will look
to lead the Lions.
