Tars Prevail in First Match, Lose Second

SAVANNAH, Ga. (September 9, 2006) ' Rollins defeated USC Upstate 3-1 (27-30, 30-28, 30-28, 30-23) and lost to Francis Marion 3-2 (24-30, 26-30, 30-14, 31-29, 17-19) at Armstrong Atlantic on Saturday afternoon.

In the opener against USC Upstate, outside hitter Piper Young and middle blocker Christina Reinders were the main offensive contributors to the Tars' victory. Young heightened the offense with 13 kills, one ace, 12 digs and five blocks. Reinders also notched 13 kills, one ace and five blocks.

Lorena Orlandini and Stephanie Nichols added to the offense with a combined 22 kills, one ace, 18 digs and five blocks. Setter Lacey Malarky had an imposing 44 assists to lead her team to success.

Defensively for Rollins, Flavia Silveira had 20 digs and two aces and Kim Cline added 14 digs and an ace. Middle blocker Brittainy Daiger also had five blocks and seven kills.

The Tars lost the first game of the match against USC Upstate 27-30, but they dug deep were able to defeat the Spartans in the next three consecutive games.

In the second match against Francis Marion, the Tars were led by the superb hitting of freshman Brittainy Daiger. She had an impressive 22 kills to drive the offense. Outside hitter Piper Young notched 16 kills, one ace and 12 digs, and Stephanie Nichols added 14 kills, two aces and three blocks. Christina Reinders had 12 kills, one ace and one block to round out the attacking effort.

Lacey Malarky totaled 60 assists, and Flavia Silveira and Kim Cline combined for 31 digs and three aces for the defense.

Rollins (7-2) will take on Barry University, their first Sunshine State Conference opponent, at home on September 15 at 7:00 p.m.
