(September 8, 2006) ' The Rollins Tars topped UNC
Pembroke 3-1 (23-30, 30-18, 30-16, 30-12) and Presbyterian College
3-1 (28-30, 30-27, 30-23, 34-32) at the Armstrong Atlantic
tournament on Friday afternoon.
In the first game,
the Tars fell to the Braves 23-30, but were able to battle back to
win the next three games decisively. Rollins was led by middle
blocker Christina Reinders, who had 13 kills, two aces and five
blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Nikki Swift also boosted the
offense with nine kills, six aces, 17 digs and four blocks. Setter
Lacey Malarky had 24 assists, two aces and three blocks to round
out the Tars offensive threat.
Freshman middle
blocker Brittainy Daiger and junior outside hitter Piper Young
contributed defensively with their stellar blocking performance.
Daiger had two blocks and Young notched six blocks to impede UNC
Pembroke.
The Tars began the
second match of the Armstrong Atlantic tournament much like they
did the first, dropping the first game to Presbyterian/>
College/>/> by a score of 28-30. Once again, the Tars fought
back, winning three consecutive nail-biting games.
Sophomore outside
hitter Stephanie Nichols commanded the offense with 15 kills, two
aces and one block.'Right-side hitter Lorena Orlandini
followed close behind with 14 kills and four blocks. Lacey Malarky
backed the offense with 54 assists and defensively, libero Kim
Cline stood out with 34 digs and two aces.
The Tars record
now stands at an impressive 6-1. Rollins will take on USC Upstate
at 11:00 a.m. and Francis Marion at 3:00 p.m. at Armstrong Atlantic
tomorrow.
