2006) ' The Rollins Tars continued to dominate their
opponents in their first match of the day at the St. Mary's
Invitational at the Bill Greehey Arena. Rollins routed
the University of Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves 3-0 (30-24, 30-18,
30-20).
Flavia Silveira
maintained stellar defensive consistency with 15 digs and four
aces. Sophomore setter Lacey Malarky factored in 41
assists and two aces to facilitate the offensive domination.
The Tars'
offense, led by Stephanie Nichols, Christina Reinders, Lorena
Orlandini and Piper Young, was phenomenal. Nichols and
Reinders combined for 20 kills, three blocks and added one ace
each. Orlandini tallied 10 kills, two digs and two
blocks. Young, an outside hitter, contributed 13 kills
and eight digs to catapult the team to another stunning tournament
match triumph.
In the second
match at Bill Greehey Arena, Rollins defeated St. Mary's University
in a nail-biting five-game match (30-25, 27-30, 30-26, 23-30,
15-10). The Tars were led by right side Orlandini, who
had 19 kills and six blocks to boost the
offense. Reinders and Nichols combined for 23 kills
and 10 blocks. Freshman Brittainy Daiger also
contributed to the victory with seven kills and four
blocks.
With the crowd
and both benches on the edge of their seats, senior outside hitter
Flavia Silveira came through in the clutch with her stats equaling
two kills, one ace, 18 digs and one block. Defensive
specialist Kim Cline and outside hitter Nikki Swift also helped to
crush the St. Mary's Rattlers with a combined three kills, five
aces and 16 digs. Malarky added 59 assists and seven
digs to the Tars' win.
The Tars open
their season by sweeping the St. Mary's Invitational
4-0. Rollins plays their next match at home on August
30 at 7 p.m. against Florida Gulf Coast.
