ANTONIO, Texas (August 25, 2006) ' The
Rollins volleyball team started their 2006 season by sweeping the
Colorado School of Mines 3-0 (30-25, 30-24, 30-24) at the St.
Mary's Invitational at Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio,
Texas.
The Tars' offense was led by junior Piper Young, who had 12
kills and five digs. Outside hitter Stephanie Nichols
and right-side hitter Lorena Orlandini each had 11 kills and setter
Lacey Malarky totaled 41 assists. Junior Christina
Reinders added five aces to the offense and Senior Flavia Silveira
dominated the defense with 19 digs.
In their second
match at the St. Mary's Invitational, the Tars thrashed Valdosta
State 3-0 (30-20, 30-20, 30-27). Sophomore outside
hitter Stephanie Nichols led the Tars with 13 kills and six
digs. Flavia Silveira propelled the defense with 13
digs and three aces. Junior Kim Cline added 22 assists
and three aces to lead the team to victory.
The Tars played
six very physical games against some tough
competition. Despite the physicality of the matches,
Rollins darted out to a 2-0 record, overwhelming both Colorado
School of Mines and the Valdosta State Blazers. The
Tars were ranked 4th in the NCAA in the preseason
polls.
The Tars will
continue their tournament play at the St. Mary's Invitational
tomorrow. Their first match will be against the
University of Alaska-Anchorage at 10 a.m., followed by a match
against St. Mary's University at 3 p.m.
