FT. MYERS, Fla. (April
6, 2006) ' The No. 14 Rollins women's tennis team suffered their
second one point loss this week as they fell to No. 21 Florida Gulf
Coast 5-4 on Thursday. The Tars went down 2-1 in doubles and took
three of the top four singles matches, but were unable to find the
deciding victory. Rollins falls to 10-9 on the year while FGCU
improves to 12-4.
In doubles, the Tars
picked up a victory in the No. 3 match with Silvia Frandji and
Anastasiya Shevchenko downing Brett Kinley and Lydia Diaz-Galindo
8-6. Cassie Webster and Sonia Bernal lost to Krista Polulak and
Maria Maggiornini 8-3 in the No. 2 match and the seventh ranked
team of Tasi Purcell and Marnie Mahler lost for just the third time
in their last 10 matches as they fell 8-1 to Jonalea Hileman and
Maria Braniecka in the No. 1 slot.
No. 24 Purcell held
rank over No. 49 Braniecka in the No. 1 singles match, winning in
straight sets 6-1, 6-2. No. 35 Marnie Mahler was also a straight
set winner, taking Maggiornini 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 2 position.
Shevchenko improved to 9-8 on the year as she defeated Diaz-Galindo
6-3, 6-1.
The Rollins women's
tennis team returns to action on Saturday, April 8 at 12:30 p.m. at
home against Eckerd.
