Tars Victorious in Home Finale

WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 23, 2006) ' Playing in their final home games of the regular season, the Rollins College Tars went out on top, defeating Albany State 11-0 in game one and 10-2 in game two. The Tars out-hit the Rams 23-9 on the afternoon and only allowed two runs. Rollins will enter the final week of the regular season with a record of 42-16.

During the break between games, the two seniors, Kelly Cruz (Winter Springs, Fla.) and Kallie Jones (Chandler, Okla.) were recognized for their contributions to the Rollins softball program. Both players finished their careers at Lake Island Park on a high note with Cruz going 4-5 with three runs scored and four RBI and Jones finishing the afternoon 3-5 with three runs scored and one RBI. Cruz continues to expand her lead as the All-Time Hits Leader at Rollins and now has 220 hits in her four year career.

The Tars dominated the Rams in game one, racking up all 11 of their runs in the third inning. Sophomore Jen Olsen (Winter Haven, Fla.), Cruz, and freshman Jamie Rausch (Ocoee, Fla.) all had two hits in the game, while Rausch and sophomore Rachel Almengual (Odessa, Fla.) led the way with three RBI a piece. Freshman Nicole Anderson (Brandon, Fla.) picked up the win, throwing all five innings and allowing only two hits, no runs or walks and six strikeouts.

Game two saw the Tars spread their scoring out, grabbing four runs in the first inning, three in the second, two in the third and one run in the fourth. The Rams rallied to score two runs in the top of the fifth to narrow the lead, but the Tars held tight for the 10-2 victory. Sophomore Ingrid Schumacher (Naples, Fla.) was the victorious pitcher, surrendering only seven hits and striking out four. Cruz, Jones, Schumacher and junior Stacy Sanders (Orlando, Fla.) each had two hits in the game. In the second inning Sanders hit her team leading sixth home run of the season, a two run shot. Junior Amanda DeFilippo (Winter Springs, Fla.) hit her first home run of the season in the third inning, putting the Tars up 9-0.

The Tars will wrap up their regular season next weekend when they travel to Boca Raton, Fla. to take on the defending national champions Lynn University. The two teams will play one game on Friday, April 28 at 1:00 p.m. and return on Saturday, April 29 for a double header beginning at 1:00 p.m.
