WINTER PARK , Fla. (April 18, 2006) The Rollins baseball team
snapped a three game losing streak with a win over Webber
International University in ten innings, 2-1. The Tars and Warriors
were locked in a pitching duel through the first nine innings, tied
at one. It took a costly error by the Webber shortstop to end the
marathon. The game was initially delayed for over an hour and a
half due to isolated thunderstorms in the Winter Park area.
'
Junior starting pitcher Jonathan Wano and senior reliever Rob Cloar
combined to pitch a masterpiece for the Tars. Wano went seven
strong innings giving up an unearned run on five hits while
striking out eight batters. Cloar relieved Wano in the eighth, and
went three innings for his third victory of the season.
'
The
Tars were led offensively by junior third baseman Gene Howard.
Howard went 3-4 on the night with a double and he scored one of the
Tars' two runs. Freshman center fielder Jesse More went 1-4 and
scored the game winning run. Senior Brent Magnuson went 1-4 on the
night and knocked in the only RBI for the Tars on the evening.
Anthony Soto, Ryan McKenzie and Eugene Martinez collected the Tars
other hits on the night.
'
The
Tars got their first run on the board in the bottom of the fourth
inning. Howard began the rally with a one out double to left
center. He advanced to third on a pass ball, and would later score
on a Brent Magnuson RBI single through the middle. The Warriors
answered with an unearned run in the top of the fifth. For the next
four innings there was very little offense. Webber got its best
chance to take the lead in the top of the tenth. Dupree started the
inning with a single. McMillan drew a walk. But the Tars were able
to squelch the rally with a strike 'em out throw 'em out double
play, catching the runner trying to take third base with just one
out in the inning.
'
Rollins took advantage of the Webber base running blunder in the
bottom half. More started the inning with a single and was moved to
second on a sac bunt. The Warriors then issued a free pass to
Martoccio. Anthony Soto then hit into what looked like a sure
double play ball which was misplayed by the shortstop. More was
running on contact and when the ball squirted away from the
defender, he rounded third and scored the winning run, giving the
Tars a 2-1 win.
'
The Tars will be back in
action this Friday when they will welcome Palm Beach Atlantic to
Alfond Stadium for a three game series. Friday's game is slated for
a 7 pm first pitch, followed by a 1pm double-header start on
Saturday.
