WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 15, 2006) ' In a Saturday afternoon double header at Lake Island Park, the Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast University took two games from the Rollins College Tars, winning game one 7-6 in a 13 inning marathon and game two 5-0. The Tars fall to 36-15 on the season while the Eagles improve to 52-4.

'

Game one was a three-hour marathon as both teams fought inning after inning to gain the upper hand. The Eagles put up three runs in the top of the thirteenth to pull ahead 7-4 and Rollins answered back, but could not get the tying run across the plate, losing 7-6. Rachael Edinger pitched all 13 innings for Florida Gulf Coast , allowing 12 hits, two earned runs, nine walks and 10 strikeouts. For the Tars, sophomore Ingrid Schumacher (Naples, Fla.) started the game in the circle before freshman Nicole Anderson (Brandon, Fla.) came on for two innings of relief in the sixth and seventh innings. Schumacher returned to the circle to finish out the game and ended up surrendering six hits, three earned runs, four walks and eight strikeouts in 11 innings of work.

'

Rollins struck first in the game, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first on RBI singles by juniors Stacy Sanders (Orlando, Fla.) and Amanda DeFilippo (Winter Springs, Fla.). The Eagles answered back by scoring three runs in the top of the third and the Tars tied the game at three in the fourth when senior Kelly Cruz (Winter Springs, Fla.) doubled to center field, scoring junior Devon Kontos (Orlando, Fla.) from second.

'

The game remained tied at three until the eleventh inning when both teams recorded a run, the Eagles on a sac fly to left field and the Tars on a Jen Olsen (Winter Haven, Fla.) single up the middle. The game remained tied at four heading into the thirteenth inning when the Eagles opened up a three-run advantage. Rollins came to the plate in the bottom of the thirteenth and Cruz once again doubled home a run, narrowing the deficit to two. Olsen, who singled to open the inning, scored the second run of the inning on a passed ball, putting the score at 7-6 with one out and Cruz on third. The Eagles then calmly recorded the next two outs to seal their 7-6 victory.

'

In the game, Olsen went 4-7 from the plate with one RBI and two runs scored. Also recording multiple hits in the game were Cruz, Sanders and Kontos. Rachel Homan was the lone Eagle with two hits, going 2-6 from the plate.

'

Game two was a different story from game one as Florida Gulf Coast put five runs on the board, four in the fourth inning and one in the sixth, and put the Tars away in seven innings 5-0. The Tars out-hit the Eagles, seven to five, but left eight runners on base compared to the Eagles two. Sarah Backe threw a seven inning shutout in the circle for Florida Gulf Coast , surrendering the seven hits and striking out two. Anderson took the loss for the Tars, with one earned run on five hits, no walks and nine strikeouts. Sophomore Rachel Almengual (Odessa, Fla.) went 2-4 from the plate to lead Rollins. Also recording hits in the game were Olsen, Cruz, DeFilippo, and freshmen Jamie Rausch (Ocoee, Fla.) and Ashley East (Pace, Fla.). Hillary Johnson and Natasha Johnson both went 2-3 from the plate with one run scored for the Eagles, with Hillary Johnson hitting her sixth home run of the season in the fourth.

'
