WINTER
PARK, Fla. (April 17, 2006) ' The Rollins College softball team
returned to their winning form on Monday evening with a double
header sweep of Palm Beach Atlantic. The Tars took game one 10-4
and game two 9-0 in six innings. Rollins improves to 38-15 on the
season while the Sailfish fall to 7-38.
'
The
opening game of the double header was a hit fest as the Tars racked
up 16 hits and the Sailfish countered with seven. The Tars held a
6-0 lead after the fifth inning, but allowed the Sailfish to come
back and score four runs of their own in the top of the sixth to
cut the lead to 6-4. Rollins would answer back with another four
runs in the bottom of the sixth and held the Sailfish scoreless in
the seventh to grab the 10-4 victory. Freshman Nicole Anderson
(Brandon, Fla.) threw all seven innings, scattering seven hits and
four runs with no walks and seven strikeouts, while Michelle Scales
picked up the loss for Palm Beach Atlantic.
'
Every
Rollins hitter had at least one hit in the game, as senior Kelly
Cruz (Winter Springs, Fla.) and freshman Ashley East (Pace, Fla.)
each went 3-4 in the game, with Cruz picking up two runs scored and
one RBI and East adding one run scored and two RBI. Grabbing two
hits in the game for Rollins were sophomores Jennifer Olsen (Winter
Haven, Fla.) and Rachel Almengual (Odessa, Fla.), and junior Stacy
Sanders (Orlando, Fla.).
'
The
Tars showed off their power in the nightcap by hitting four
homeruns including Sanders' three run shot to left center field to
end the game in the bottom of the sixth, her team leading fourth
homerun of the season. In the third inning, the Tars went deep
three times, including back to back shots from senior Kallie Jones
(Chandler, Okla.) and sophomore Ingrid Schumacher (Naples, Fla.).
Almengual started the long ball routine with her first homerun of
the season over the left field fence, to break the scoreless tie in
the third. Jones' three run shot was her third homerun of the
season while Schumacher notched her second.
'
The
Sailfish could not counter the Tars power as Schumacher picked up
her fourteenth win of the season in the circle. In six innings of
work, she gave up only two hits and no runs or walks and struck out
four. As was the case in game one, all of the Tar's hitters
recorded at least one hit in the game as Rollins out-hit the
Sailfish 14-4. Olsen led the way with three hits, while Sanders
recorded four RBI.
'
The
Tars will look to continue their winning streak as they return to
conference play on Friday, April 21 when they host Nova
Southeastern. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
