WINTER
PARK, Fla. (April 21, 2006) ' On a rainy Friday night in Winter
Park, the Rollins College Tars defeated the Sharks of Nova
Southeastern University 4-1. Freshman Jamie Rausch hit a three-run
homerun in the bottom of the first to give the Tars the early
advantage, which they held on to for the remainder of the game.
Sophomore Ingrid Schumacher picked up her fifteenth win of the
season and freshman Nicole Anderson recorded her first collegiate
save as the Tars improve to 39-15 overall and 10-9 in the Sunshine
State Conference.
'
Sophomore
Rachel Almengual got the Tars going in the first as she beat out a
throw to reach first base and then advanced to second when junior
Stacy Sanders walked. Rausch then stepped to the plate and sent the
ball over the left-center field fence for her fourth homerun of the
season, giving Rollins the early 3-0 lead.
'
Katie
Veltri quickly answered for the Sharks (20-25, 6-13 SSC) as she
sent a Schumacher pitch over the center field fence, cutting the
Tars advantage to 3-1. The Tars struck again in the second as
freshman Ashley East doubled to center field and then scored on
sophomore Jennifer Olsen's bunt single. Olsen then stole second
base for her twenty-ninth steal of the season, breaking the Tars
single season stolen base record. On the season, Olsen has 29
stolen bases and has only been thrown out four times.
'
As
the rain continued to fall and neither team was able to put another
run on the board, the Tars walked away with the 4-1 victory. The
two teams will return to the field on Saturday, April 22 for a 1:00
p.m. double header at Lake Island Park.
