MELBOURNE, Fla. (December 29, 2006) ' The
Rollins women's basketball team defeated #19 Fort Valley State in
commanding fashion, winning 64-48 on the first day of the 2006
Florida Tech Holiday Classic on Friday afternoon.' The Tars
improved to 7-2 with the win, and the Lady Wildcats dropped to
5-3.
Senior forward Larissa McDonough led the way for the Tars,
scoring a game-high 18 points and pulling down nine rebounds.' The
Ormond Beach, Fla. native also notched one block and one steal.'
Sophomore guard Jennifer Dyer recorded her first career
double-double, scoring 12 and grabbing a career-high 10 boards.'
Junior forward Jennifer Catti was the third Tar in double figures,
scoring 10 points.
The Lady Wildcats were led by Lesley Code and Tracie Glawson,
who each scored 12 points.' Glawson pulled down eight rebounds, and
Deborah Jones had six.' Shawnta McCoy notched a game-high four
steals.
Both teams struggled to score in the first half; Rollins shot
20.6% (7-34) in the opening period, and Fort Valley State shot
20.0% (6-30).' The Tars led 21-17 coming into the second half, and
they started to heat up at that point.' Rollins shot 48.5% (16-33)
in the second half, including four of eight from three point
territory.' The Tars held the Lady Wildcats to just 25.4% from the
field, the second lowest total for an opponent this season.
Rollins won the rebound battle easily, finishing the game up
55-39.' The Tars also notched 23 offensive boards, including 17 in
the first half.
The Tars return to Melbourne, Fla. on Saturday for the second
day of the 2006 Florida Tech Holiday Classic, where they will face
