BOCA RATON, Fla. (October 8, 2006) ' The
Rollins Tars defeated the Lynn University Fighting Knights 3-2
(28-30, 30-23, 31-29, 23-30, 15-13) on Sunday afternoon at the de
Hoernle Center.
Outside hitter Stephanie Nichols headed the Tars' offense with
21 kills, 18 digs and three block assists. Piper Young totaled 19
kills, one ace, 15 digs and one block assist.
Libero Kim Cline had 26 digs, while setter Lacey Malarky tallied
52 assists.
In the first game, Rollins (12-8, 4-5) was led by right-side
hitter Lorena Orlandini and outside hitter Piper Young who both
tallied five kills. The Tars held a substantial lead for the entire
game until the Fighting Knights clawed their way back and won Game
1 30-28.
The Tars turned it around in the second game (30-23) with the
help of outside hitter Nichols who had four kills, two digs and one
block. Orlandini also contributed with three kills, one dig and a
block.
Rollins brought the Game 2 momentum right into Game 3, winning a
nail-biting 31-29. Nichols led the Tars with six kills, three digs
and one block. MB Brittainy Daiger and Young added three kills
each.
Lynn University fought back and won the fourth game 30-23. Young
and Nichols were the Tars' offensive leaders in Game 4. Young had
seven kills and four digs, and Nichols totaled four kills and eight
digs.
With the Tars down 2-0 in the fifth game, the offense dug deep
and rallied back to a 7-2 lead. Rollins and Lynn went toe-to-toe,
trading the lead numerous times. At 13-12 Lynn, it was Piper Young
who came through in the clutch with two kills to bring the Tars to
14-13. Game 5 ended with a ball-handing error by Lynn setter Megan
Bedner.
Outside hitter Larissa Witherspoon was the offensive contributor
for Lynn University (8-9, 3-5) with 24 kills, two aces, 24 digs and
three blocks.
The Tars will travel to Jefferson City, Tenn. on Friday, October
13-14th to play Newberry College, Carson-Newman College,
Lenior-Rhyne and USC-Aiken at the Carson-Newman Tournament.
