Rollins Volleyball Splits a Pair of Matches in Final Day of Action

JEFFERSON CITY/>, Tenn./>/> (October 14, 2006) ' The Rollins volleyball team split a pair of matches at the Carson-Newman Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

In their first match of the day, the Tars defeated the regionally ranked #9 Lenoir-Rhyne Bears 3-2 (23-30, 30-25, 30-21, 23-30, 16-14). Unfortunately, Rollins then fell to the regionally ranked #6 University of South Carolina-Aiken Pacers 3-1 (33-31, 30-25, 28-30, 30-21).

Against Lenoir-Rhyne (18-10), outside hitter Piper Young led the way for the Tars with 21 kills and 10 digs. Middle blocker Christina Reinders notched 12 kills, one ace, five digs and one block. Stephanie Nichols also contributed to her teams' win with 10 kills, three aces and 14 digs.

Setter Lacey Malarky totaled 46 assists and one ace and libero Kim Cline had 26 digs for the Tars defense.

In their second match against #6 USC-Aiken (23-5), Young commanded the offense with 22 kills and 11 digs. Reinders followed with 17 kills, two solo blocks and two block assists.

Defensive specialist Cline had 24 digs for the Tars and Malarky added 48 assists.

The Tars went 3-1 overall in the Carson-Newman Invitational. They will take on #8 Florida Southern College at home on Wednesday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m.
