Tars Bested by Bucs

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Tars wrapped up their weekend on the road Saturday afternoon, falling to Barry in three sets (24-26, 15-25, 22-25) at the Health & Sports Center.

Rollins and Barry went back-and-forth from the opening serve, with neither side able to create much separation early. Lelolai Paulino-Dinzey dropped in an ace before Cameron Grange, Vivian Scuteri,  and Rylee Yarborough each found the floor, helping the Tars stay a step ahead through the early exchanges. Yarborough added two more kills as the teams continued to trade blows, while a Kayla Goodloe and Robinson Repass block pushed Rollins in front, 10-9.

Goodloe and Grange kept the offense moving before Vivian Scuteri took over for a stretch, putting away a kill to break a 14-14 tie before Aryanna Spainhower followed with an ace. Scuteri struck again to extend the lead to 17-14, forcing Barry into a timeout. The Buccaneers slowly worked their way back, eventually pulling even at 19 before the two sides traded points down the stretch. Goodloe gave Rollins a 20-19 edge, but Barry responded to move ahead, 22-21. A Scuteri and Willow Barron block tied things at 22, and another Scuteri kill made it 23-all. Spainhower followed with an ace to hand the Tars set point at 24-23, but Barry answered with the final three points to steal the opener, 26-24.

The second set started much like the first, with the two sides trading points through a 7-7 tie. Goodloe struck twice early while Scuteri added a pair of kills, but the Buccaneers began to find some breathing room with a 4-0 run to take an 11-8 advantage. Rollins continued to battle behind kills from Goodloe and Grange, but Barry stretched the lead to 17-11 midway through the frame. Yarborough and Grange each added kills down the stretch, but the Bucs maintained control to take the second, 25-15.

Goodloe opened the third with a pair of early kills before a triple block from Grange, Scuteri and Barron evened the score at three. Barry pushed back in front, but Yarborough and Goodloe kept the Tars within striking distance. Goodloe connected again before Jenna Garza delivered an ace to trim the deficit to 12-11, and Grange followed with a kill as Rollins continued to hang around.

The Bucs eventually stretched the margin to 17-13, but the Tars refused to go quietly. Yarborough put away a kill before Molly Morris dropped in an ace to make it 18-16. Goodloe added another pair of kills as Rollins stayed close, but Barry pushed ahead, 22-18. Goodloe answered once more, and after the Bucs reached match point, a service error and Grange ace kept the Tars alive at 24-22. Barry found the final kill on the next point, closing out the match, 25-22. Rollins hit .545 in the final set, committing just two errors on 22 swings.

Goodloe paced the Rollins attack with 14 kills on a .346 clip, including eight kills on 10 swings in the third set. Grange added eight kills, seven digs and an ace, while Yarborough finished with seven kills without an attack error, hitting .292. Scuteri chipped in seven kills and three block assists. Morris dished out 17 assists, Garza added 16, and the Tars finished with six aces as a team.

The loss moves Rollins to 10-12 overall and 3-8 in Sunshine State Conference play.

The Tars return to action on Friday, October 23, to host Florida Southern at 7 p.m. for the team's annual Dig Pink game.
