Argonauts Defeat Tars in Home Opener

West Florida defeated Rollins 5-1 on Friday evening

WINTER PARK, Fla. (September 12, 2025) - Men's soccer suffered their first defeat of the season, falling 5-1 to the visiting West Florida Argonauts on Friday. Both teams now stand at 1-1-1 on the year.

It didn't take long for the scoreboard to start moving. In the fifth minute, the Argos were able to work the ball deep into the Tar zone, and used a nifty pass from Rafael Esteves to set up Manu Bernabeu for a goal.

From there, the whistles were brought into action as the Tars were called for infractions four times in the first ten minutes of the game, followed by a yellow card on a seemingly routine jump ball. Still, the Tars stayed with their game plan and were rewarded for their patience.

Following a West Florida offside, Rollins went on the attack, led by Yousef Shakweer. After shedding multiple defenders, he placed a perfect pass through traffic at the feet of Justin Nelson. After moving past is man, Nelson was able to send the ball home to tie the score at one.

Rollins suffered a blow late in the half when the Argonauts scored their second goal with just two minutes left off a really nice cross into the box.

Five minutes into the second half, the Argonauts scored, and then one minute later, scored again. They added a fifth in the 67th minute, controlling the tempo and the half as they held on for a win.

West Florida won the shot battle 17-6, including a massive difference of seven on goal compared to the Tars' two. Rollins was called for twelve fouls in the game, with eleven of those coming in the first half. Six different players (three from each team) received a yellow card in the match.

Rollins will return to action on Sunday morning when they host the Sprin Hill College Badgers at Cahall-Sandspur Field. Kickoff is scheduled bright and early for 10:30am.
