Rollins Comes Up Short in SSC Title Game at Top-Ranked Tampa

The Tars fell to the Spartans on Saturday, 11-5

TAMPA, Fla. (April 26, 2025) – The third-seeded Rollins men's lacrosse team battled hard against top-ranked and top-seeded Tampa on Saturday, falling 11-5 in the championship game of the 2025 SSC Men's Lacrosse Championship Presented by Pollo Campero. The Tars (10-8) were within a goal (4-3) at the half before the Spartans (18-0) pulled away in the second half.
 
Sam Mattson led the Tars with a pair of goals while Jack Johnstone chipped in with a goal, an assist, and a team-high four ground balls. Maxwell Beuck (10-8) took the loss in goal, making eight saves on 19 shots.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter
  • The first quarter showcased both teams' defensive abilities, as Tampa scored the only two goals of the period.
Second Quarter
  • Carder Ungerott opened the scoring in the second half and just over a minute later Johnstone scored to tie things up at 2-2.
  • After Tampa briefly regained the lead, Logan Myers found the back of the net to tie the game at three with 2:07 left in the first half.
  • The Spartans scored 30 seconds later to go up 4-3, which is where things stood at the half.
Third Quarter
  • Tampa extended its lead to 8-3 with four straight goals in the third, including three in a span of 99 seconds.
  • Mattson scored with 1:05 left in the quarter to get Rollins back within four at 8-4.
Fourth Quarter
  • The Spartans pulled away in the fourth, scoring the first three goals before Mattson netted his second of the game, giving Tampa an 11-5 win.
 
UP NEXT:
The Tars, who were ranked eighth in the most recent regional rankings, will wait for the NCAA II Championship selections to be announced to learn if they will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. Those selections will be announced on Sunday, May 4th on NCAA.com.
