ORLANDO, Fla. (March 19, 2025) - Men's tennis suffered their first conference loss of the season, dropping a match 7-0 to the #11 Saint Leo Lions. The Tars now stand at 8-6 overall on the season.
Saint Leo took two of three doubles courts to earn the first point. They had a 6-0 shutout on number three, but Rollins answered back with a 6-3 victory courtesy of
Nico de Giacomo/
Fabian Gusic, who handled Dylan Andrianaly/Vincent Thiel. Eduardo Cohen/Luis Iriarte then held off
Luke Quaynor/Richard Stoieberer to the tune of 6-2.
It was all Lions in singles play as well. On five, Kodai Kato defeated the red-hot
Richard Stoiberer 6-3, 6-1. Nationally-ranked Thiel then dispatched Quaynor on one, 6-4, 6-2. The match clinched when Andrianaly ousted Gusic 6-2, 6-2 on number three.
The final three matches all needed extra effort to finish. Freshman
Pietro Cappellaro took Cohen to three sets, but ultimately fell 6-4, 3-6, 10-2. On two, Jose David Segovia was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over de Giacomo. The final match was on four where Iriarte outplayed
Mo Anterist 4-6, 7-5, 10-7.
"Tough day today," stated head coach
Jay Friedman. "We just got beat. It's certainly not how we wanted it to go, but all we can do is hope for another shot at them later in the season. Some guys found some footing to compete, but overall just not the match we wanted to turn in today."
Rollins will have some time off before their next match on Monday, March 24 against Franklin Pierce. First serve is scheduled for 2:00 pm from the USTA National Campus.
