ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (March 11, 2025) - A Tuesday mid-week matchup with the Flagler Saints did not go as planned for Rollins as they fell to their in-state foe 8-5. The loss moves the Tars to 13-6 on the year while the Saints improve to 16-6.
Flagler struck for two runs in their first at bat. With two outs, a slow chopper to third looked like the inning might end, but it turned into an infield single. That was followed by an RBI base hit to left from Eli Maddox. In the next at bat, with runners on the corners, Flagler ran a double steal, with the runner on third scoring before the one on first was thrown out, making the score 2-0.
Following scoreless efforts in the second and third, Rollins was able to get on the board in the fourth.
Mason Wilson singled with one out, and moved to second on a base hit from
Dalton Pyzer.
Chris Sparber then followed with a rip shot up the middle to plate Wilson. The next two batters flew out though, ending the threat.
The Saints added two more runs in their half of the fourth, taking advantage of two hit batters and two singles to push the lead to 4-1.
Rollins got one run back in the fifth on a RBI single from
Joey Rubin that scored
Michael Furry, who had reached on a double earlier. After Rubin stole second, a pair of strikeouts again left a Tar stranded in scoring position.
Flagler needed just one hit in the fifth to score three runs. They were helped by sloppy play from the Tars that included a wild pitch and two errors. One of the errors was a costly throw in the dirt on a routine ball to short with two outs that brought in a pair of runs.
The Tars did not go down without a fight. Pyzer led off the sixth with a double, and scored on a fielder's choice from
Angelo Ramirez. In the seventh, Wilson brought Rubin in with a single to center. The inning could have had more damage, but two outs were made on baserunning blunders that saw runners get backpicked.
The fifth run for Rollins was scored in the ninth when a double play ball from Whitehead brought in Furry to make the final of 8-5.
Five Tars finished the day with multiple hits, including three from Pyzer.
Edward Berry took the loss after allowing two runs in the first two innings of the game.
AJ Seymour was solid in the eighth and ninth on the mound, allowing one hit and striking out three.
Rollins will be back to conference play this weekend. They will faceoff against the Nova Southeastern Sharks on Friday at 3pm from Alfond Stadium in Winter Park.
