Tars Topple Trojans

Rollins defeated Mount Olive 4-1 on Monday afternoon

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 10, 2025) - It was not a fun afternoon at the USTA National Campus on Monday as bad weather wreaked havoc on scheduling and start times. However, Rollins and Mount Olive were able to complete enough singles matches for an official game, one that saw the Tars come out on top 4-1 over the Trojans. Rollins now stands at 8-5 on the season.

Doubles play was canceled after the two teams ahd to wait almost three hours for weather to pass and the courts to become playable. The two coaching staffs agreed to play singles only to get things moving.

Mount Olive was the first to find the scoreboard when Kristoffer Dalbak ousted Luke Quaynor 6-1, 6-3 on court one. Nico de Giacomo avenged his teammate on three, posting a 6-0, 6-2 final over Philip Carstensen soon after.

Freshman Pietro Cappellaro played well from position six, earning his second straight win and third on the season with a 6-2, 6-3 effort versus Khushal Mehta. Richard Stoiberer then got in on the act with a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Luke Oosthuizen on court four.

The final two courts both went to three sets. Mo Anterist claimed the winning point for the Tars with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 triumph over Hiroma Nishikata on court five, sealing the win for Rollins. With other teams waiting to use the courts, the match ended before Fabian Gusic and Bram Poel could finish their duel on two. It was a tight one, with Gusic holding a small advantage 7-6 (7), 4-6, 3-1 when time was called.

"What a tough day, sitting around in rain delay for three hours before beginning with singles is never going to yield an easy result," remakred head coach Jay Friedman. "First off, thank you to the Navy women's coaching staff who graciously let us use their court time to finish our match - they are truly first class. Secondly, I was really happy with the Tars today. They were able to stick to it and beat both the elements and a Trojan team that didn't want to go quietly. We are in it now, and look forward to coming out of this training week with renewed enthusiasm for the back third of the regular season."

The men will have a few days to enjoy spring break before returning to the courts on Sunday, March 16th against Trinity College out of Connecticut. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 pm from the USTA National Campus.
