WINTER PARK, Fla. (September 6, 2024) - The twentieth-ranked Wingate Bulldogs proved to be too much for the Rollins Tars on Friday as the visitors walked away with a 4-1 victory in the season's opening game.
Wingate controlled the first 15 minutes of the game, outshooting the Tars four shots to one. Their fourth attempt found the back of the net when Leroy Best found an open Pablo Pozos to open the scoring.Â
Six minutes later, tremendous ball control and a touch pass from Lucas Jansen led to a Fabio Rodrigues brace to make the score 2-0.Â
Aside from three yellow cards, the next twenty minutes were a simple case of back-and-forth between the two teams. However, in the 40th minute, Rollins was able to break through the Bulldog defense.Â
After playing a ball into a crowd near the 18-yard box, Finaly Prain came away with possession. He kicked out to
Kaden Foreman, and no one on the defense ran out to greet him. The junior captain surveyed the field and then flipped a high-arcing shot over the surprised Wingate keeper for a beautiful goal.Â
Following an extended halftime due to weather, Wingate was able to strike for two more scores in the second half as they were able to navigate the Tar defense. Rollins matched them with five shots, but only one was on target.Â
The win snaps a five-game winning streak for Rollins, who last lost to Wingate in 2016.Â
The Tars will be back in action on Sunday, September 8 when they take on Lander University. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
