Tars Storm Past Hurricanes

Rollins defeated Georgia Southwestern 2-1 on Thursday evening

AMERICUS, Ga. (September 12, 2024) - Women's soccer collected their third consecutive win to open the season Thursday, downing the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes by a score of 2-1. The Tars now stand at 3-0 on the year, while the Hurricanes fall to 0-2.

The bulk of the excitement came during a ten-minute stretch a little over halfway into the first half. Rollins was the first on the board following a corner kick. The initial strike was punched out by the Hurricane keeper, but it ended up at the feet of defenseman Emily Gross. The junior assessed her position and blasted a shot from beyond the box that found the right corner of the goal for her first collegiate score.

Only seven minutes later, Georgia Southwestern tallied the equalizer when Siaomee Bagnost found Lucia Bustamente for the strike.

On the ensuing possession for the Tars, the scoreboard was changed once more. After Anna Todd controlled the ball around midfield, she tapped the ball to Lizzie Hill. The senior surveyed the field and decided to send a shot from long distance that seemed to hang in the air forever. It eventually found space between the keeper's outstretched hand and the crossbar, putting Rollins up 2-1.

The second half was all about defense as the Tars allowed only two shots on goal, both of which were saved by Lauren Mehos. They ran the clock down and celebrated their first road win of the season.

The Tars will stay a few nights in the Peach State before their next match on Sunday, September 15 at Clayton State. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:00 am.
