Tars Fall to Barry in SSC Semifinals

Rollins will compete in the third place match tomorrow

LAKELAND, Fla. (April 27, 2024) – The fifth-ranked and second-seeded Rollins men's tennis team came up short in the semifinals of the SSC Championship in Lakeland on Saturday, falling to eighth-ranked and third-seeded Barry, 4-1. The Tars are now 18-2 while the Bucs improve to 13-6. Barry advances to tomorrow's title game against No. 1 Saint Leo, while the Tars will face fourth-seeded Embry-Riddle in the third-place match.

COACH'S QUOTES:
"We knew it'd be a tough match today and as the wind picked up and the doubles got tight we unfortunately came up short at 2 doubles," Head Coach Jay Friedman said. "In the singles it was a bit of an emotional roller coaster. We started down and the guys surged back, unfortunately time just ran out. Nico yet again was moments away from taking his court and Richie was up early in the third. It was close, but our hats are off the Barry guys for coming out and playing it with intensity from start to finish."

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Doubles
  • Barry earned the doubles point with a 6-1 win on court one and a 6-4 victory on court two.
  • Efe Comu and Nico de Giacomo were winning their match on court three, 5-4, but the match was abandoned when the doubles point was clinched.
Singles
  • After the Bucs scored on courts one and two to go up 3-0, Charlie Putrino got the Tars on the scoreboard with a 6-0, 6-3 win on court six.
  • Putrino's point would prove to be the only one for Rollins as Barry clinched the match a few minutes later with a win on court five.
  • Nico de Giacomo was close to picking up a win over No. 58 David Rieme on court three, leading the match 6-4, 5-3 when it was abandoned.
  • Richard Stoiberer was preparing for a third set in his match on court four after splitting the first two sets with Tim Riedel, 7-5, 3-6, when the overall match was clinched.
