Upset Bid at Lynn Falls Short in Overtime

Rollins led 11-8 in the fourth, but ultimately fell to Lynn, 12-11

BOCA RATON, Fla. (April 20, 2024) – The 19th-ranked and fifth-seeded Rollins women's lacrosse team nearly pulled off an upset over 13th-ranked and fourth-seeded Lynn on Saturday, falling to the Fighting Knights in overtime, 12-11. The Tars finish the season 11-6 overall while Lynn improves to 13-4 and advances to face top-seeded Florida Southern in the semifinals.

Caroline Gastonguay led all players with four goals and three assists to go along with two caused turnovers and a ground ball, while Charlotte Gastonguay and Aleksa Allen each tallied a pair of goals. Allen also had a pair of ground balls and a game-high four caused turnovers, and Holyn Trautwein led the Tars with eight draw controls. Angelina Vitale (3-2) made 11 saves on 23 shots in goal, including a pair of clutch saves at the end of regulation.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter
  • Neither side found the back of the net until over halfway through the first quarter, with Lynn scoring first at the 7:11 mark, followed quickly by Allen tying the game just 27 seconds later.
  • The Fighting Knights retook the lead 18 seconds after that, but the Gastonguay sisters put the Tars in front with a pair of late goals – Caroline scored with 1:07 to play in the quarter and Charlotte made it 3-2 with 27 ticks left.
  • The home team was able to find a quick answer, scoring 14 seconds later to level the score at 3-3.
Second Quarter
  • Lynn caught fire in the second, rattling off four straight goals to go up 7-3 before Madison McGarry netted the lone Rollins goal of the period, making it a 7-4 game at the half.
Third Quarter
  • The Tars dominated the third quarter, outscoring Lynn 4-0 in the frame.
  • Abigail DeGroat got the scoring going, followed by Allen and Lauren Noonan, tying the game at 7-7.
  • Charlotte Gastonguay's second of the game with 1:53 left in the quarter put the Blue and Gold back in front, 8-7.
Fourth Quarter
  • Lynn once again tied the game early in the fourth, but Caroline Gastonguay put home three straight markers to give the Tars their biggest lead of the game, 11-8, with 9:29 to go.
  • LU fought back, scoring three straight goals over the next 7:30 to tie the game at 11.
  • The home side had a woman-up opportunity for the final 56 seconds of regulation, including a free-position attempt with just over 30 seconds left, but failed to score thanks to two huge saves from Vitale.
Overtime
  • Lynn continued to have a numerical advantage early in overtime thanks to the yellow card issued late in the fourth quarter, and the Fighting Knights took advantage of the opportunity, scoring the game-winner 44 seconds into the overtime period.
