WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 12, 2024) -
Ashley Worrell was locked in on Friday night, tossing a complete game, no-hit shutout of the Eckerd Tritons as Rollins won 2-0. The win moves Rollins to 31-10 on the year and 14-8 in SSC play.
The game did not have much to report in the first few innings. Eckerd drew a walk with two outs in the top of the first. While seemingly insignificant at the time, it would end up being the only time they put someone on base on their own accord.
From there, Worrell would retire the next 17 Tritons with a mix of strikeouts and softly hit groundballs. The grad student struck out the side in the first and fifth innings, and would end her night with nine punchouts. In one of the weirder notes of the night, Eckerd did not flyout or pop out a single time in the game.
The only offense of the night came in the sixth inning. Until that point, Brandilyn Reymer had matched Worrell nearly pitch for pitch. That changed when
Grace Germer led off the inning with a solo shot to left-center to give Rollins the lead. The Tars would add one more run when
Claire Long drew a bases loaded walk that scored Brie Michellli.
Worrell would allow one baserunner in the seventh due to an error at short, but left her stranded as a groundout to Worrell ended the no-hit effort.
The righty tossed 110 pitches in the game as she improved to 17-5 on the season. This was the fifth no-no in Worrell's career (2019 vs. Florida Southern, 2019 vs. West Georgia, 2020 vs. Barry, 2022 vs. Embry-Riddle).
The two teams will wrap up the series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon from Martin Luther King Jr. Park.
