WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 5, 2024) – The Rollins softball team swept both ends of a doubleheader on Tuesday, running its win streak to 10 consecutive games with wins over Chowan by scores of 9-1 (6 innings) and 8-2. The Tars are now 16-5 on the season, while the Hawks fall to 3-9.
Game 1 – Rollins 9, Chowan 1 (6 inn.)
Taylor Hartman was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs while
Ashley Worrell went 2-for-2 with two walks, a double, a home run, two runs scored, and two RBIs. Worrell (7-2) also earned the complete game win in the circle, allowing just one unearned run on three hits and two walks while striking out 11.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
- Chowan took advantage of a pair of Rollins errors to push across a run in the top of the first.
Third Inning
- Rollins answered back in the third, sending eight batters to the plate and scoring three times.
- Grace Germer led off with a single and moved to second on a fielder's choice that also allowed Brie Michelli to reach.
- Two batters later, Worrell doubled home Germer to tie the game at 1-1.
- Hartman then singled up the middle to drive in Michelli, with Worrell also scoring on the play thanks to an error, which put Rollins up 3-1.
Fourth Inning
- Maddie Degnan led off the fourth with a double and promptly stole third, which allowed her to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Michelli to extend the lead to 4-1.
Fifth Inning
- Rollins again sent eight batters to the plate in the fifth, beginning with back-to-back solo home runs from Worrell and Hartman to make it a 6-1 game.
- Kaeli Zahradnik reached on a one-out infield single and then stole second and third before scoring on a base hit by Emma Gipple, increasing the lead to 7-1.
Sixth Inning
- Taylor Waters led off the bottom of the sixth with an infield single and quickly stole second.
- After Worrell walked on four pitches, Hartman singled to score Waters, with both Hartman and Chloe Bauer, who was pinch-running for Worrell, moving up 60 feet on the throw home.
- Sarah Young ended the game early on a rarely-seen walk-off squeeze play, which saw Young get thrown out at first base, but with Bauer crossing the plate the out didn't much matter as the game was over thanks to the eight-run rule.
Game 2 – Rollins 8, Chowan 2
In game two, Young was 3-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, a run scored, and two RBIs, while Michelli finished 3-for-4 with a stolen base, two runs scored, and one driven in. Worrell was 2-for-2 with two walks, a run scored, and an RBI, and Waters ended up 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, a run scored, and a pair of RBIs.
Emily MacMullen (3-1) got the win, surrendering a lone unearned run on five hits in four innings of work, walking one and striking out six.
Reese Twiggs earned her first save of the season, as she pitched the final three innings, giving up one run on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Second Inning
- The Hawks plated a run on a Rollins error in the second to take a 1-0 lead.
Third Inning
- Rollins sent eight batters to the plate in the third inning, just as it did in game one.
- Zahradnik started the rally with a one-out infield single and prompty stole second base.
- Michelli then singled up the middle to plate Zahradnik, tying the game at 1-1.
- Two batters later, Worrell drew a two-out walk, followed by a walk to Hartman to load the bases.
- Young then delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single to score Michelli and Worrell, putting the Tars up 3-1.
Fourth Inning
- The Blue and Gold tacked on three more runs in the fourth, beginning with an infield single from Isabella Bertorelli.
- Jodee Matos bunted her over to second base, and Chloe Bauer followed that with a pinch-hit infield single.
- Two batters later, Waters hit a ground-rule double that bounced over the fence, allowing both Bertorelli and Bauer to score to make it 5-1.
- Worrell then singled through the left side of the infield, but the left fielder completely missed the ball which allowed Waters to score easily, lifting the lead to 6-1.
Fifth Inning
- The Tars added a run in the fifth on a foulout that led to a throwing error, allowing Young to score to make it 7-1.
Sixth Inning
- Worrell tacked on the final run of the day for Rollins with an RBI infield single in the sixth.
Seventh Inning
- The Hawks strung together three hits and a walk in the seventh to score once, but Twiggs was able to escape any further damage and leave the bases loaded, securing the 8-2 victory.
