Tigers No Match for Tars

Rollins defeated West Alabama 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon

WINER PARK, Fla. (March 27 2024) - Men's tennis picked up their fifth consecutive win on Wednesday with a 4-1 victory over West Alabama. The Tars now stand at 14-1 on the season.

The doubles point was awarded to Rollins with a pair of wins on two and three. Luke Quaynor/Moritz Stenzer took down Igbinovia/Ishikawa 6-2 on court two for the first point, followed by a 6-1 win for Efe Comu/Richard Stoiberer against Bonev/Goldammer on number three to clinch.

Singles play saw Wilson Igbinovia fight past Quaynor on court two for a 6-1, 6-1 win that would tie the overall score at one.

Guillermo Castaneda was the next to finish with a win, defeating Villislav Bonev 6-1, 6-1 on court four to give Rollins a 2-1 lead. The win was the 50th in the career of Castaneda, who spent his previous seasons at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Efe Comu and Lucas Hammond competed on the feature court, with the Turkish delight powering through to a 6-3, 6-4 win. Comu moved up to #23 in the latest ITA individual  computer rankings that were released while the match was in play.

Stoiberer clinched the point for the Tars on court three with a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 win versus Eita Ishikawa.

"With imminent rain, and a loud West Alabama group, the guys got through today," stated head coach Jay Friedman. "It was a really solid performance by Richie to close it out and clinch it just in time. Guillermo got his 50th career dual match win today with a really strong performance. I'm so proud to be a witness to him, what a great person. We have some things to tighten up, but I couldn't ask for a better group to share the season with"

Rollins remained at #4 in the ITA poll this week, and are tied with #1 Saint Leo for the fewest losses in the country.

The next test for Rollins will come on Thursday, April 4 at Eckerd College. First serve is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
