Tars Walk Off Lynn in Series Opener

Rollins scored four runs in the ninth to win it

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 15, 2024) – The Rollins baseball team plated four runs in the bottom of the ninth to snatch a 10-9 walk-off win over Lynn on Friday afternoon in the series opener between the two teams. Rollins is now 12-8 on the year, 4-3 in SSC play, while the Fighting Knights are 15-10 overall, 3-4 in conference games.
 
Chris Sparber went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, and three RBIs, while Oscar Murray was 1-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored, and three RBIs, and Stephen Deans was 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
 
Edward Berry started for the Tars, allowing eight runs (four earned) on six hits and a walk in five innings, striking out three. Nate Thomas (3-0) picked up the win in relief, tossing two scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out one.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
  • Lynn opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first, but the Tars answered right back in the home half.
  • Jack Herring laced a one-out double and quickly moved to third on a wild pitch.
  • Mason Wilson singled to score Herring, and two batters later, Sparber singled in Wilson to give Rollins a 2-1 lead.
Fourth Inning
  • The Fighting Knights retook the lead on a three-run home run in the fourth, though Sparber got one run back on a solo shot in the bottom of the inning, making it a 4-3 Lynn lead.
Fifth Inning
  • Lynn scored four times in the fifth, three on another homer, to go up 8-3.
  • Deans led off the bottom of the inning with a double, followed by a bunt single from  Jose Perez.
  • Murray then launched the first pitch of his at-bat over the right field fence for a three-run homer, trimming the deficit to 8-6.
Ninth Inning
  • After the visitors scored an insurance run in the seventh, the Fighting Knights held a 9-6 edge through the latter stages of the game, until the bottom of the ninth.
  • Perez led off the inning with a walk and promptly swiped second.
  • Murray then reached on a fielding error that allowed Perez to score to make it 9-7.
  • Herring then worked a base on balls to bring the potential winning run to the plate.
  • Two batters later, Nathan Tinder brought home Murray on an RBI groundout, making it a 9-8 game.
  • With two outs, Sparber delivered an RBI double to plate Herring with the tying run.
  • After Angelo Ramirez came in to run for Sparber, Matthew Farner came up big with a base hit to right field to score Ramirez with the winning run.
 
UP NEXT:
These same two teams will meet again tomorrow for a doubleheader at Alfond Stadium, with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
