Rollins Stays Hot, Sweeps Hillsdale

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 10, 2024) – The Rollins softball team extended its win streak to 13 games with another doubleheader sweep on Sunday, defeating Hillsdale 1-0 in eight innings and 6-3. The Tars are now 19-5 on the year, while the Chargers drop to 6-8.

Game 1 – Rollins 1, Hillsdale 0 (8 inn.)

Ashley Worrell went 1-for-2 with a walk and Kaeli Zahradnik was 1-for-3 with the lone RBI of the game. Worrell (9-2) tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in her eight shutout innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Third Inning
  • Hillsdale got its first baserunner of the game in the third but couldn't advance her past second base.
Fourth Inning
  • The Chargers threatened in the fourth, putting a runner on second with one out and a runner on third for the first time in the game, but Worrell again kept them off the board.
Eighth Inning
  • Hillsdale had runners at second and third in the eighth inning, but Worrell's eighth strikeout of the game ended the inning with those runners left stranded.
  • Taylor Hartman was the runner placed on second base to start the bottom of the eighth, and Chloe Bauer came in to pinch run for her.
  • Sarah Young advanced the runner to third with a ground out, setting the stage for Zahradnik.
  • Zahradnik delivered on a 1-2 pitch, singling through the hole on the left side to score Bauer and give Rollins the 1-0 win.

Game 2 – Rollins 8, Chowan 2

In game two, Zahradnik was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and four stolen bases, while Grace Germer went 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored, two RBIs, and three stolen bases.

Emily MacMullen (4-1) got the win, surrendering three runs (two earned) on four hits in four innings, walking one and striking out a career-high nine batters. Keivana Durand earned her third save, pitching three scoreless innings to close it out, allowing a hit and three walks while striking out six.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Third Inning
  • The Chargers plated single runs in each of the first three innings to take an early 3-0 lead.
  • Rollins rallied in the bottom of the third, with Germer kicking things off with a leadoff walk and immediate steal of second.
  • Two batters later, Germer stole third and scored on an error as the catcher's throw to third bounced down the line.
  • Taylor Waters then singled and moved to second on a wild pitch.
  • Two batters later, Hartman delivered a clutch two-out double to score Waters, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
Fourth Inning
  • Zahradnik led off the fourth with an infield single and eventually stole second base.
  • Olivia Alvarez sacrifice bunted her to third, and she came in to score on a Germer infield single to tie the game.
  • Michelli then singled home Germer, who had moved to second on an error, putting the Tars in front for the first time in the game, 4-3.
Sixth Inning
  • Alvarez scored Zahradnik with a squeeze bunt and Germer picked up another RBI single just four pitches later, increasing the Tar lead to 6-3.
Seventh Inning
  • Durand made quick work of the Chargers in the seventh, setting them down in order with a pair of strikeouts, sealing the 6-3 win and the doubleheader sweep.
