WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 8, 2024) - Baseball was tripped up in their series against #8 Colorado Mesa, falling 5-1 to the Mavericks. The Tars move to 2-2 on the year, while the Mavericks improve to 2-0.
After starter
Edward Berry put the Mavs down in order in the top of the first, he got support from his offense right away.
Damaurys Rodriguez was hit by a pitch, and promptly stole second. With two outs,
Mason Wilson drilled a liner into center to plate his mate, making it 1-0.
The Mavericks finally broke through against Berry in the fourth with three weak line drives. On the third one, centerfielder
Angelo Ramirez fielded the ball cleanly and launched a rocket to home plate, but the Mesa baserunner slid under the tag to tie the game.
Colorado Mesa would add a second run in the fifth without a hit, taking advantage of a hit batter, an error, and a sac fly.
Rollins threatened in the sixth when
Oscar Murray walked and stole second with no one out. Unfortunately, he was thrown out trying to steal third, quelling the threat.
The Mavericks added their third run in the seventh, and could have had many more, but
Jacob Burr came out of the bullpen with the bases loaded and recorded two easy outs to escape further damage.
Mesa added two more in the ninth to make the final of 5-1.
Berry took the loss despite a solid line of five innings, four hits, one earned run and six strikeouts. Cole Seward earned the win for Colorado Mesa with an almost identical line of five innings, three hits, one earned run and six strikeouts.
The Rollins offense mustered just four singles and one walk on the day.
The two teams will battle it out again on Friday. The start time is 3:00 pm from Alfond Stadium.
