WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 27, 2024) - Women's tennis put together their top performance of the young season on Tuesday, but fell just short in their bid to upset the #9 Washburn Ichabods (6-0), losing 4-3. The Tars now stand at 2-3 on the season.
Rollins struck first in doubles on court one as the Polinas, Ligay and Vlasova, teamed up to defeat Jung/Schmid, 6-2. Washburn would even things up on court two when Koper/Martensson snuck past
Katie Groves/
Eve Wasil 6-4. That put all eyes on the court three. In another close match, it was the Ichabods coming out on top, 6-4, as Shelley/Ubachs outlasted
Milla Falster/
Erin Yaroshuk.
The Tars would tie up the overall score with the first completed singles court coming from number six.
Nina Mitrofanova made quick work of Maddie Shelley, 6-1, 6-0. The next point went to Washburn on court four where Peyton Koper worked past Falster 6-3, 6-3.
The remaining four matches all needed a third set to decide a winner. Court five was the next to finish as
Polina Ligay fought back from a 6-0 loss in set one to take set two 6-2 and set three 6-1. This tied the match at 2-2.
Washburn took the lead for the third time when court two wrapped up. Renske Ubachs fought
Nancy Liu to a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win. They would then clinch the match with a win on the featured court where Maja Jung held on against
Polina Vlasova for a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win.
Fighting til the end,
Katie Groves earned the Tars a third point on court three with her 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Lara Schmid.
Things won't get much easier for Rollins as they enter a stretch of four straight matches against Top 25 opponents. Their next challenge will be at home on Thursday, February 29 against #3 Lynn in a SSC matchup. First serve is scheduled for 3:00 pm from Winter Park.
