Tars Split Doubleheader with Eagles

Rollins dropped game one 8-7, and won 4-0 in game two

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (February 24, 2024) - Softball is headed home with a conference series win after splitting their Saturday doubleheader with Embry-Riddle. The Eagles came back for the win in game one, 8-7, and were then shutout by the Tars in game two, 4-0. Rollins now stands at 7-5 overall, and 2-4 in SSC play.

Game One
Embry Riddle 8, Rollins 7

A high-scoring affair saw the Tars score a run in each of the first six innings, but a late rally from the home team Eagles helped them to victory.

Taylor Waters drove in the first run of the game in the first with a single, but Embry-Riddle answered with a three-run home run in their half to go up. Grace Germer got one of the runs back with an RBI triple in the second, and Rollins would tie the game in the third thanks to a Jaden Walker RBI double.

The Eagles scored two runs to retake the lead on the end of a costly error from the Tars in the bottom of the third. Again, Rollins fought back. Germer got on base in the fourth on a double, then stole third. There was an error on the play, allowing Germer to score. Two batters later, Ashley Worrell singled through the left side to bring in Brie Michelli and tie the game a five.

Jaden Walker smoked her second double of the game in the top of the fifth to bring in Waters, giving Rollins their first lead of the game at 6-5. They would then make it 7-5 in the sixth when Waters doubled in Taylor Hartman

Unfortunately, the Eagles responded with a home run, double, single, and took advantage of a passed ball to score three times in the sixth to make the final of 8-7. Rollins had a runner on third with one out in their final at bat, but a groundout and strikeout ended the game.

Game Two
Rollins 4, Embry-Riddle 0

After a short break, the two teams were back at it. This time, Ashley Worrell was in the circle, and she repeated her fantastic outing from Friday with another gem in this one.

Rollins had an early opportunity with runners on second and third in the second, but Waters was thrown out trying to score on a double steal.

The next few innings did not have too much to report on as both pitchers were dialed in. Rollins finally broke through in the sixth when Worrell stepped up with the bases loaded and laced a single to center to bring in Sarah Young. Next up was Waters, who delivered a sac fly to center. After a double steal, Hayley Lazo ripped a base hit to center to bring home pinch-runners Chloe Bauer and Jodee Matos, making the final of 4-0

Worrell struck out two in the final frame to secure the complete game shutout. Her final line read seven innings, one hit (an infield single in the fifth), two walks, and seven strikeouts.

Next up for Rollins is a doubleheader on Wednesday against the #10 ranked Wilmington Wildcats. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 5:00 pm on February 28.
