WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 17, 2024) – The Rollins softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to visiting No. 21 Saint Leo on Friday, 6-2 and 14-6 in six innings. The Tars are now 5-4 overall and 0-3 in SSC play, while the Lions move to 8-3, 3-0 in conference games.
Game 1 – No. 21 Saint Leo 6, Rollins 2
Grace Germer was 1-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored, while
Sarah Young went 1-for-1.
Keivana Durand (1-1) took the loss, allowing six runs (two earned) on five hits in 4.2 innings, walking three and striking out three.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
- After Saint Leo jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, the Tars answered back in the home half.
- Germer led off with a walk and Taylor Waters followed with another walk to put two on with nobody out.
- Claire Long moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt, and during the next at-bat both Germer and Waters were able to score on balls that got past the catcher, tying the game at 2-2.
Fourth Inning
- The Lions took advantage of a Rollins error to retake the lead with a run in the fourth.
Fifth Inning
- SLU tacked on three more unearned runs in the fifth to go up 6-2.
Seventh Inning
- Rollins couldn't muster a comeback in the seventh, going down in order to drop the first game, 6-2.
Game 2 – No. 21 Saint Leo 14, Rollins 6 (6 inn.)
In game two, Waters was 1-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and two RBIs, while Germer was 1-for-3 with a home run, RBI, two stolen bases, and two runs scored.
Claire Long finished 1-for-2 with a stolen base and two RBIs, and
Hayley Lazo was 0-for-2 with a walk and a pair of runs scored.
Emily MacMullen (1-1) was handed the loss, surrendering five runs (four earned) on six hits in 3.1 innings, walking one batter and recording no strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
- Rollins got off to a strong start as MacMullen set the Lions down in order in the top half.
- Germer was hit by the first pitch of the bottom of the inning, and she promptly stole second and third base.
- After Lazo walked, Waters drilled a double down the left field line which scored both runners to put the Tars up 2-0.
- Three batters later, Jaden Walker drove home Waters with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.
Second Inning
- The Lions quickly roared back with three runs in the second to knot things up at 3-3.
Fourth Inning
- Saint Leo strung together three hits in the fourth to plate two more runs, giving the visitors a 5-3 lead.
Fifth Inning
- SLU took advantage of two hit batters, a walk, and an error in the fifth to score five times, increasing the lead to 10-3.
- Rollins bounced back, utilizing two hits and a pair of Lion errors to score twice in the bottom of the inning, with both runners scoring on a base hit by Long, trimming the deficit to 10-5.
Sixth Inning
- The Lions scored four times in the sixth to extend the lead to 14-5.
- Germer launched a one-out solo home run in the bottom half, but the Tars couldn't push any more runs across as Saint Leo hung on for the 14-6 win via the eight-run rule.

The Tars are back in action next weekend in another SSC series, this time at Embry-Riddle. Game one is set for Friday at 6 p.m. in Daytona Beach.
