WINTER PARK, Fla. (October 26, 2024) - A late goal from the Embry-Riddle Eagles proved to be the difference in a 2-1 thriller on Saturday night in Winter Park. The loss moves Rollins to 7-3-1 on the year with a 4-2 record in SSC play. The Eagles improve to 8-4-2, 4-4-2 SSC.
Rollins was the first to strike with a goal in the twelfth minute.
Lizzie Hill controlled the ball in the Eagles zone, and passed ahead to
Briyah Drayton. Drayton collected in traffic and was able to find room for a shot to the far post for her fifth goal of the year.
In the 31st minute, the Eagles found room to equalize. After clearing the ball from their zone, Lauryn Mateo made a nifty through pass to a streaking Grace Foyer who was able to beat
Lauren Mehos with a strong kick.
The second half provided a tremendous amount of action, including the highlight of the night. In the 71st minute, a foul was called on the Tars in the box. Foyer lined up for the penalty kick, but Mehos made a spectacular diving save to her left to keep the game tied at one each.
The ten minute stretch between the 70th and 80th minutes was incredible, with both teams firing shot after shot at the goalkeepers. After stopping a pair of on-target attempts from Rollins, the Eagles hurried down field, and scored the go-ahead goal in the 81st minute on a Berglind Thrastardottir strike.
Rollins did not manage another shot in the game after that, and would end up falling 2-1.
Mehos was busy in goal, recording ten saves in the tough luck loss. Rollins put five shots on target from five different players.
Prior to the start of the game, the coaching staff recognized eleven graduating athletes before their final regular season home game.
The Tars will wrap up their regular season with three away games. Their first of the three will be at Saint Leo on Wednesday, October 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
