Tars Upset 18th-Ranked Barry in Five Sets

WINTER PARK, Fla. (Oct. 25, 2024) – The Rollins volleyball team pulled off a 3-2 upset of No. 18 Barry on Friday night, taking down the Bucs 14-25, 25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 15-13. With the win, the Tars are now 12-9 overall, 3-7 in conference play, while Barry goes to 12-2, 5-2 in SSC matches.
 
Lana Gerard led all players with 22 kills and added eight digs, while Emma Gongora added 16 kills. Natalie Horsley posted a double-double with a match-high 47 assists and 15 digs, while Adriana Lopez picked up a team-leading 19 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
  • An 11-2 burst by the Bucs gave the visitors a commanding 16-7 lead as they took the opening set, 25-14.
Set Two
  • Set two saw Barry take an early 9-4 lead, but the Tars rallied, using a 7-0 spurt to go up 14-12.
  • A late 4-0 run pushed the Blue and Gold to a 23-19 edge and Rollins held on for a 25-21 win to tie the match at a set apiece.
Set Three
  • In the third frame, the Tars again had a big run midway through the set, scoring four straight points to spark an 8-2 run that gave the home team a 20-15 lead.
  • Rollins won four of the last five points to secure a 25-20 win and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Set Four
  • The Blue and Gold started well in the fourth set, taking a 16-13 lead, but the Bucs came back with an 8-2 run to jump ahead, 21-18.
  • Barry won four of the last five points of the frame to win it, 25-21, tying the match at two sets each.
Set Five
  • After dropping the first two points, Rollins stormed back to win five straight, taking a 5-2 lead.
  • Barry eventually battled back to tie it at 11, and the two sides traded sideouts until the set was still tied at 13.
  • A Gerard kill gave Rollins match point, and Jenna Garza clinched it with a service ace to give the Tars a 15-13 set win and a 3-2 victory in the match.

The Tars will be back at home on Tuesday, October 29, when they host Florida Tech at 7 p.m.
