ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (April 7, 2023) – The Rollins softball team swept both ends of a doubleheader on Friday, winning 8-6 and 9-8, to complete a three-game sweep at Eckerd. The Tars are now 26-14 overall and 10-11 in SSC play, while the Tritons fall to 20-15, 5-13 in conference action.
Game 1 – Rollins 8, Eckerd 6
Brie Michelli went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and two RBIs in game one, while
Taylor Waters was 2-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run.
Grace Germer finished 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and
Kaeli Zahradnik was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base.
Ashley Worrell started in the circle for the Tars, allowing one unearned run on three hits in three innings, walking three and striking out wo.
Taylor Hartman (7-0) got the win in relief, giving up five runs on six hits in two innings, walking one and striking out two.
Avery Garbarek earned her first save of the year, tossing two scoreless and hitless innings with one walk and one strikeout.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
- Ashley Troutman led off the game with an infield single and Germer immediately delivered a two-run homer to put the Tars up early.
- Eckerd responded in the bottom half, taking advantage of an error to plate an unearned run, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Second Inning
- The Tars sent 10 batters to the plate in the second, scoring five times on four hits, aided by three Triton errors.
- Jaden Walker drew a four-pitch walk to open the frame, and Zahradnik followed with a base hit that moved Walker to third.
- Zahradnik then stole second and Walker was able to score on a throwing error, increasing the lead to 3-1.
- Five batters later, Michelli came up with a two-out, two-run single to make it a 5-1 game.
- Waters then singled and Worrell was able to score on another Eckerd error, building the lead to 6-1.
- Claire Long followed with a base hit and Michelli was able to score on yet another Triton error, giving Rollins a 7-1 lead.
Fourth Inning
- Eckerd scored twice in the fourth to get back to within four at 7-3.
Fifth Inning
- Waters blasted a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence to lead off the fifth with a home run, regaining a five-run lead at 8-3.
Sixth Inning
- A three-run home run brought the Tritons back to within two at 8-6, but Garbarek came in and limited the damage, preserving the lead for the Tars.
Seventh Inning
- Garbarek didn't allow Eckerd to complete the comeback as she set the Tritons down in order in the seventh, slamming the door on the 8-6 win.
Game 2 – Rollins 9, Eckerd 8
Waters was 3-for-3 with two runs scored in game two, while
Emma Gipple was 2-for-2 with a walk, two doubles, a run scored, and two RBIs. Worrell went 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI, and Germer was 1-for-4 with a run scored, two stolen bases, and an RBI.
Emily MacMullen started, allowing five runs (one earned) on six hits in three innings, walking none and striking out three. Garbarek (8-3) got the win, giving up three runs on two hits and two walks in 3.1 innings, striking out three. Worrell earned her second save, securing the final two outs while issuing one walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
- Eckerd got on the board first, sending nine batters to the plate en route to a 3-0 lead after one inning.
Second Inning
- Waters opened the second with a single and moved to second on a groundout.
- After Walker singled, Waters came around to score on a fielding error.
- Zahradnik then singled, allowing Walker to score to make it a 3-2 game.
- The Tritons responded, scoring twice in their half to regain a three-run cushion at 5-2.
Third Inning
- Long plated a run in the third with an RBI groundout, cutting the deficit to 5-3.
Fifth Inning
- Rollins' bats came alive in the fifth as the Tars batted around, sending 10 batters to the plate.
- Michelli and Waters got things started with back-to-back singles.
- Long was then hit by a pitch, loading the bases with nobody out.
- Walker followed by drawing a walk to score Michelli.
- Zahradnik then laid down a successful squeeze bunt to plate Waters, tying the game at five.
- Gipple put the Tars in front with a two-run double to score Walker and Long, making it a 7-5 game.
- Two batters later, Germer singled in Gipple, building the lead to 8-5.
- After Germer stole second, Worrell singled her home to give Rollins a 9-5 lead.
Sixth Inning
- Eckerd got a solo home run in the sixth, trimming the deficit to 9-6.
Seventh Inning
- A two-run home run got the Tritons back to within a run (9-8) with one out in the seventh.
- Worrell took over in the circle and retired two of the three batters she faced, preserving the 9-8 win and the series sweep.
UP NEXT:
The Tars will have two weeks off before they travel to West Palm Beach to open up another three-game conference series at Palm Beach Atlantic on Friday, April 21. The series opener is set for a 6 p.m. start.
